Meet Oliver

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other wonderful dogs in need. Thank you!

5/16/21 Update: Oliver is a happy guy, enjoying a routine in which he feels secure and relaxed, and has plenty of play time. When the kennel owner takes her dog out, she hears Oliver playing with his giggle ball, getting excited just knowing his turn is next! A respected, well-known trainer worked with Oliver and believes Oliver to be a truly nice dog who will be fine in a calm household without lots of commotion, and that he was anxious in his prior home. Oliver is now focused and happy to please, loves being outside and included with people. He met the trainer's dog and the two were playing together within minutes. A video and new pictures of Oliver at the kennel with his trainer are included with this update. Oliver loves rolling in the grass and playing with his giggle ball. He goes with the flow with no complaints. He is lonely right now and needs a human to love.

Oliver's Story: "Hi, my name is Oliver and I am a 7-year old, 52-lb, black, mixed-breed dog. If I do say so myself, I am a handsome boy with my long silky coat and soft eyes. I lived my life with one owner, but like so many people, life changed during the pandemic and he moved to a place dogs could not go. My canine sister and I found ourselves in a Louisiana shelter in late January. Sunshine took us both in but because we were not bonded, she went to another home.

I am super affectionate and enjoy playing with toys. I especially love being outside and hanging out on a deck or playing in the yard are my favorite things! I get along with other dogs, but I never really met a cat. I love to be petted and I stay very near my person and I love hanging out on the couch or by your feet and I love sleeping on the bed if that's allowed in my new home.

I have had a tough go of it though, since losing the only home I ever knew. I was adopted by a nice lady who kept me for five weeks. She had a great fenced yard and there was an older Lab to hang out with. Things were going along fine until the day I got a shot at the vet’s in the morning. I wasn't feeling so well and during an afternoon walk, a man we didn’t know approached and reached over me. It scared me, so I nipped him on the leg. He got down to my level and spoke kindly because he understands rescue dogs can be scared while getting settled in and then I was fine with him. A short time later at home, a couple I had met once came in the front door unexpectedly, and I bit that man on the leg. He was OK but I was confused and doing what I thought I needed to do since my mom didn't invite those people into our home. When I meet new people outside properly before going inside, I do just fine. Since those incidents I have met several new people without any problems at all.

At the moment I am staying at a kennel where they are very nice to me. But truth be told, I am lonely for a home and my own person. I had a nice bath and was such a good boy getting fluffed and buffed! I have a wonderful trainer who is helping me and will also give advice to anyone who brings me home, so we can be so happy together. (Oh, that sounds like a song...So happy together.....!) The trainer talks about helping me to learn I can be the follower and my person is the leader. He says I’m a very nice dog! My wish list for a happy home includes a person who is kind and firm with me, a fenced yard, some walks, a quiet home with adults, a cozy place to sleep, and maybe even a dog friend to hang out with. I am a good boy with a sweet soul who fell a little “off the rails.” If you think I might fit in with your family, please ask about me. I promise to love you unconditionally and be your friend."

Oliver is vaccinated, neutered, micro-chipped, and tested negative for heartworm. An adopter who will be Oliver's in-charge person and understand his needs will be great for him. He is a nice dog with a beautiful spirit who just needs the right match.

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

ABOUT OUR RESCUE
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters will be required to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may indicate that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are frequently getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and complete the application process so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on the observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters, and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will behave and adapt in your home.

All dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. However, if an adopter's vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog may be returned and a full refund would be provided.

Most of our dogs are fostered in private homes. We do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! To this end, the rescue retains an interest in each dog and our dogs can never be surrendered, re-homed, or sold. Should an adopter no longer be able to keep their SGRR dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer providing proper care. Adopters agree to follow up visits as needed.
