Nutro is a 2-year-old hound mix with intelligence, energy, and a complex history that requires experienced, committed adopters. He was rescued by our team from Okeechobee County in 2022 as a young pup and was later adopted, but sadly returned to us in 2024. Nutro has many strengths-he is housetrained, knows basic commands, and is dog-friendly-but he also has behavioral needs that require structure, consistency, and patience. With moderate to high energy, Nutro thrives in a home where he can have regular physical activity, mental enrichment, and calm, confident leadership. He has shown resource guarding behavior, especially around food and high-value items, with both people and other dogs. These behaviors are likely rooted in his early experiences and survival instincts, and while manageable, they do require an adopter who is experienced and comfortable setting clear boundaries. He should be fed separately from other pets and given space when he's in possession of toys or food. Nutro enjoys the company of other dogs and can do well with canine companions, as long as introductions are done properly and routines are maintained. However, he should not go to a home with cats or small animals, as he has a strong prey drive and may not be safe around them. Any children in the home should be older and able to understand his boundaries. Nutro is not suited for first-time dog owners, but with the right guidance, he has the potential to be a loyal and deeply rewarding companion.
