Meet Nita

Until last week, Nita’s life was one living chained to a post in a dirt lot with nothing more than a dog house. Her life was watching as everyone else lived. Once in a while she would get to go out with her owner to inspect his grounds, but the rest of her time was just watching. When her owner died, she waited for two more months, chained to that same post, with only her dog house, waiting for someone to come.

Nita was lucky. She didn’t know it, but she had a friend who found out what was going on and was determined to help her. He began reaching out, looking for help. In the meanwhile, he brought blankets for her house, as the weather was getting colder at nights. He even brought a leash to take her out for walks and get her used to walking. Whenever her new friend would come, she would jump for joy. And then, one day he brought his dog, just to see how she would be with a furry friend. Nita’s entire body wagged back and forth, sniff, sniff, sniff. You would have thought she were in heaven to be able to see another dog.

The morning we heard of Nita, we couldn’t let her wait another day. One of our volunteers picked her up and made the long trek down to Coastal’s new home. She was so happy to be with people. More than anything, she was happy to be able to run without the quick yank of the chain that had stopped her for so many years. One thing we have noticed about this sweet little girl, she is grateful for every moment of attention, for every touch of the hand. She is grateful for every meal she gets, and she is so grateful to not be alone.

Today Nita gets to spend time walking with the volunteers. She can be a strong little girl, and she’s not yet used to walking by your side. Everywhere she looks, there is something new, and she wants to soak in every little thing. For a dog who has been deprived of so much, her personality shows just what kind of survivor she is. We are so happy that we were able to rescue her. One day, her fur will shine like the diamond that she is, with the dirt lot underneath her feet and the dust in her eyes, a distant memory.

Our adoption process begins with completing an application on-line. A phone screening will soon follow, and lastly a home visit will be conducted by our volunteers.
