Meet Nina Starr Braunwald DFW

Named for one of the very first female cardiac surgeons, our Ms. Nina had a very significant heart murmur when she was born. She was the only puppy in the litter with this condition. Sometimes, puppys heart chambers just do not finish closing during development. She had heart surgery at LSU in early June 2022. Her murmur was repaired and her cardiologist released her. While a heart murmur is something a vet should check for at every visit, we have been assured that Nina has a long life ahead of her now that her heart is repaired. Nina is able to lead a normal happy life with no worries. She is currently fostered in the DFW area and would love to have a dog sibling to play and lounge with. She is a vocal dog and is probably not suited for the apartment life, but any home with a fenced yard is ideal.

TGPR Nina Starr is READY for her family! The DNA results are in and Ninas are not really surprising to her foster. Despite being told her litter had Malinois in their lineage, her DNA showed she is predominantly Great Pyrenees (82%) and no Malinois at all. In addition to her coloring, she has inherited a high level of biddability from her German Shepherd ancestry. This dog is extremely sweet, very in tune to what we want, and extremely fun to train. She is highly intelligent and I credit that to her 80% guardian dog lineage. She can think critically and figure out what you want. The good news is she wants to please. We enjoy her quite a bit. She has an amazing rescue story, but dont adopt a dog for their story: adopt a dog because they are a great fit for your family. Nina does wonderful with other dogs, kids, and cats. She is playful but can calm down when requested. Crate trained, but also has been sleeping with the door open and showing she can be trusted unsupervised for short periods. She is a puppy, though, so we always go slow and we do not set our fosters up for failure.

Ninas perfect family understands that she has puppy energy still, likes to train their dog, and isnt sedentary. She loves a playful dog friend but is respectful of the boundaries of dogs who dont want to play. For all those applicants who have come to us over the years looking for a Pyr to jog with? This is your girl. She would love to have you condition her up to be a jogging partner over time once her bones and joints are ready.

Nina has a solid sit and down but a short attention span for sticking to it. She wants to pop right up and do it again. Next skill will be stay. She is highly treat motivated and extremely intelligent, so I have no doubt she will master it quickly.

We are working on her not having to announce herself at the fence line upon exiting, and she is making a ton of progress. I think this is something she will learn, but if you have uptight neighbors she might not be for you. On the flip side, if a big alert bark at appropriate times will bring you a sense of security, she will be happy to provide that. I dont think shell back it up with any amount of ferocity, she is friendly to all. Nina has learned to redirect her excitement about being in the yard from barking to grabbing a toy. She is the smartest and most fun foster we have ever had. Do not miss out on this dog.
