Meet Nils (Housetrained Friendly Gentleman)
Friends, I have to tell you, it looks like my owner did not treat me very well. I was found as a stray dog, injured and wearing a very thick chain around my neck. I also had a large growth on my side (it's since been removed and has healed nicely!). My human friends are amazed at my forgiving nature. I bear no grudges for what happened to me, and I enjoy each and every day I get to spend with all the people here who have come to love me. I am truly a lucky boy!
I am very stressed in my cage at the shelter, so it is hard for me to relax when I am at the shelter. That's why I need your help in getting me to my forever home!
Once I get outside the shelter, I become so mellow and comfortable. It's the real me! I pull very hard at first -- it's just so exciting to be outside! -- but in a harness and after only a few minutes of walking, I demonstrate my nice leash manners, often walking right beside my handler.
I really enjoy taking long walks into the park. We have a very busy state park near the shelter, and I just love being in the midst of all the excitement there! I am unfazed by joggers, strollers, children, or other passersby (although I do sometimes like to job along with cyclists!). I just love being outside!
I am also very playful with squeaky toys (I'm like a little kid sometimes!), but I easily give up my toys (and my food and rawhides) as soon as I am asked. I'm a real gentleman!
I like to be scratched around my chin and ears. You can practically hear me purr! Sometimes I can flinch from a touch to my head. My human friends are reassuring me that I am now safe and loved, and I know that I will learn this very important lesson soon. It is the best feeling in the world to be loved!
I am a friendly, mild, and gentle boy. I would do best in a home without young children due to my size. I would thrive with some caring older kids, teens, and adults. I also need to be the only pet in the home. I am such a big love bug ... why would you need anyone else?!
I was lucky to live in a foster home in northern NJ for a brief time, and I did so well! I have shown myself to be housebroken, calm, and affectionate. I am the perfect mix of snuggly and playful! Best of all, although I was not crated, I didn't touch anything in the home each day when I was left alone. Yay for me!
Thanks for reading all about me. You know that saying that "one man's trash is another man's treasure?" Well, my human friends say that describes me perfectly! Come see for yourself why this gentle sweetheart is the treasure for you.
I can't wait to meet you! Love, Nils xoxo
