Get ready to #HaveAHootWithNewt! This gorgeous 38-40lb mixed breed is ready to get the party started with the right adopters. Read on if you're looking for a fun, active pup!

Newt is a super athletic dude - he could take a 4ft fence as easy as an agility jump no problem. In that vein, he would LOVE a home where he'll be able to engage with his owner in a dog sport! Super smart, decent food and toy motivation that can be built on, and eager to work with his handler; I could see Newt enjoying a variety of things from nosework to rally to agility. He will not be satisfied as just a backyard pet (though he does enjoy snuggles after he gets a chance to work). Alternatively, he may be suited as an active companion or trail dog for all you adventurers out there!

A young guy at around 1-1.5 years old, Newt does need some training for common adolescent herding dog behaviors. He gets jumpy when excited, can get mouthy when initiating play, and he will get into mischief if you turn your back on him in the house (counter surfing, chewing inappropriate items, etc). He's been a quick study and is learning the ropes fast here, but his adopter will need to keep it up! Newt is pretty good on leash, just needs to work on manners around distractions (and practice keeping his herdy instincts in check around cyclists). He is house trained and mostly crate trained - he had a lot of feelings about his crate initially, but is learning to relax quietly with time and training. His anxious behaviors while crated (barking and scratching) began to resolve within his first week here and have continued to improve, but he will need continued training to truly get comfortable!

He does fine with dogs after proper introductions provided there is a knowledgeable human to step in proactively as needed. He has shown some resource guarding towards other dogs, if there are dogs in his adoptive home care will need to be taken so this behavior dissipates rather than becomes strengthened.

Newt is neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives. He is being fostered in Marshfield MA and needs to meet his potential family prior to adoption to ensure a great fit!
