BERKELEY, CA - BERKELEY SHELTER - ID #A056488- “NELSON” – ADORABLE, YOUNG CHOW X/PANDA LOOKING PETITE BOY, ONLY 40 LBS, GOOD W MALE DOG AND CAT TESTED WITH AT SHELTER
URGENT- SHELTER IS FULL AND ASKING FOR HELP- NEEDS GOOD HOME or FOSTER & RESCUE TO SAVE THIS FRIENDLY BOY
Please help us find a good home, or foster and/or rescue asap for this dear boy who was found as a stray and brought to the Berkeley City Shelter where his owner unbelievably never came.
The shelter has fondly named him Nelson, estimates he is 3 years young, and says he weighs 40 lbs with no reported medical issues.
Nelson has a partially black chow tongue and is likely also mix with a herding breed due to his unique coloring. His bio says, “He’s very friendly with people and shows appropriate interest in other dogs. He can be a bit anxious and will whine when he gets impatient with his handler to get moving! Nelson loves to walk, and would probably also be happy running. He has tons of energy and enthusiasm. He has the softest coat and loves to be brushed. Nelson also appears very housetrained.”
The shelter manager has also reached out this full shelter and says, “He’s a favorite among volunteers here because of his look and non-reactivity. He’s been fine with other dogs, he and my 85lbs pit bull hung out in the playroom for a while together; no playing going on but polite coexisting. He has not been reactive to dogs or people on walks, either. Nelson sniffed around for a bit and then was really good with the cat; he definitely had a chance to be bad if he wanted to.”
We have videos of interaction with both this dog and cat we can share.
The shelter further noted, “the one issue we know he has is separation anxiety, but as I’m sure you know, so many dogs experience that on varying levels. He may just be a slightly anxious dog by nature, and we did give him trazodone a couple of days after intake to help him relax. We have noticed that he doesn’t like going back to his kennel (can’t blame him) and was adopted by a person who took him on the hike in the pictures but had to bring him back because of his separation anxiety and her being goes for long stretches of hours for work. She was very sad to return him, and she said that was the only reason.”
Nelson was just neutered so he is ready to go to a home who can be patient and ideally have someone home most or part of the day to spend with him.
