Meet Nelson - $400

Nelson is a handsome 3-year-old, 63 lbs., Redbone Coonhound. He is friendly and loving.

Nelson gets up around 6-6:30 and we take him outside right away for potty – we don’t have a fence, so he is on a leash to do this. We then either go on a 30–45-minute leash walk in the neighborhood or take Nelson to the off leash dog park. At the park he runs around in the bushes doing his hound thing which includes much sniffing and some howling. He is so focused on this he won’t pay attention to us, so he is wearing a bell and a short drag line so we can track him and get him when it’s time to go home.

Nelson then gets breakfast and rests on his bed.

Because we are retired, we are taking Nelson out during the day for short potty walks or sometimes additional longer walks. We do make sure he gets another long walk in the evening so he poops before bed time.

We walk Nelson on a no pull Freedom harness. His walking pace is moderate – he is not a big puller. When we see another dog approaching, he gets very excited and may howl. We will ask him to sit and use string cheese as both a reward and a lure to get his attention off the dog. When he sees a squirrel or rabbit, he doesn’t want to walk on with us and he howls quite a bit. We have also used a gentle Leader head collar to walk him and he will accept walking with it. In general, after he is a little tired, he is better at giving us attention on the walk. He doesn’t get spooked by noises, vehicles, etc. on our walks.

Inside the home Nelson likes to be around us and will come when called. He doesn’t stay in a crate for a long time, but can free roam when we aren’t home. He does eat and get treats in his crate and will race to the crate for meals and wait to eat the food you put down until given permission.

Nelson’s play style with our resident dog is vigorous. When our resident dog isn’t at home, he is quiet and relaxed most of the time. He likes to play with toys and will play tug with you and run around with his toys.

Nelson has a hound voice which he uses on different occasions – when something changes in the house, like someone coming or going or going upstairs and of course when seeing wildlife out the windows. Over his time with us his howling has lessened. We distract him by working on simple commands and rewarding him or directing him to go to his 'rug' (dog bed) .

We don’t recommend having Nelson be unsupervised off leash in a fenced area. He has gotten over a fence a few times since being in rescue. He may be a candidate for an invisible fence or an e-collar if trained appropriately.

Nelson has an outgoing personality and is a loving dog. He is a great companion for a person who likes walking, hiking or even running.
