Nala's Story
My name is Nala and I’m looking for my forever home! I’m about 7 or 8 years old – I don’t know for sure since I lived on my own as a stray for several years before being rescued and us dogs don’t keep track of age like humans do. I’m a petite girl, weighing just 18 lbs, but like most Shibas, there’s a lot of sweetness and sassy “Shibatude” packed into this little body. If you haven’t experienced “Shibatude” yet, it basically means that I like doing things on my own schedule. When I first came into rescue it was a big adjustment to live indoors with a family. I had recently had a litter of puppies and one of my pups came with me into foster care. Once he was weaned, he went to live with another family. I missed him at first, but to be honest, it was kind of a relief because he was a typical rambunctious little boy who liked to play rough and honey, I’m too old for that nonsense. So my days of having puppies are behind me now and I’m good with that. I’m learning that I like living indoors with humans. At first it was scary – there were so many new noises and smells. But I’ve learned that I love the soft places called couches where I can sit and get scrtiches from my humans or watch the world go by outside my window. I may be shy, but my foster mom says I’m affectionate in my reserved Shiba style. I like to be near my humans and to know where they are. I like having a securely fenced yard to run around in, but it sure is nice to come back inside and have a comfy warm bed in my crate to sleep in instead of sleeping outside in the cold. I’m a pretty laid-back girl who likes the quiet life. I prefer to take my meals alone at night when it’s quiet and everyone else has gone to sleep. Loud noises and sudden movements still make me jumpy and fearful. There are a few other dogs here in my foster home and they’re pretty nice, but when they all start barking at the same time, it makes me anxious. I also like car rides. It’s pretty cool to watch the world go by from the comfort of my own climate controlled room on wheels. My ideal forever home will have a nice grown up human or two, but no little kids please. They terrify me! It would be great if my forever family had some experience with fearful dogs like me. I’d be fine as an only dog, but if you had another nice dog who is gentle and laid back and respectful, that’s okay too. I’d also like a securely fenced yard, please, where I can hang out and enjoy the fresh air. And when I come in from a brisk trot around the yard on a cold morning, I’d just love it if you gave me a nice rub-down to warm me up. I’m spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, and healthy. Foster mom said that my teeth may need some attention. I’m currently being fostered in Monroe, Wisconsin. If you live in the Midwest and are looking for a shy, sweet and petite companion, then visit www.savingshibas.com/adopt to start the application process. The application helps SIRA learn more about you so they can confirm that we’d be a good match. If we are then they’ll introduce you to my foster mom so we can meet!
