Monroe's Story
Monroe, born June 24, 2024 weighs in at 8.20 pounds/3.7 KG. He arrived from a Canadian shelter with a female (Baby - pending adoption) & another male (Cesar - foster adopted). He was surrendered to the shelter, because his owner had to many dogs.

All 3 of these dogs are very sweet and loving, but they do have that nervous Min Pin energy.

I'm the Founder of Mattie's Place and I'm fostering Monroe.

To know this boy is to easily love him. Though he's super nervous (just avoidance nervous) when first meeting people, once he trusts you he is incredibly loyal and a 100% velcro dog. The kind of dog that would walk through fire if you asked him to. This is very typical of the Miniature Pinscher breed. A breed I've shared my life with and loved for 2 decades.

Monroe will thrive in a quiet home.. He has no issue with men or women and strangers are just scary, but he can also warm up to either sex equally. He needs someone that will nurture him as he's a really sensitive soul and craves human companionship. He just wants to be beside you, touching you, sharing your space.

He can be left home alone, crated, but he will vocally protest, though it's a quiet protest and doesn't last long. More of a high pitched but quiet squeal of protest. He does really love his humans though and being with you as often as he can be makes his soul super happy.

Monroe lives with me in a condo and does great. He can alarm bark at noises in the hallway, but settles quickly when told no. He is still having occasional potty accidents, going out 4 times a day, so would likely benefit from having a secured backyard that he has more access to during the day. And with that, I'm certain his housetraining will be more on track.

If you're someone that wants to love your dog hard and be loved that hard right back by your loyal canine companion, you should give Monroe consideration.

Monroe has met various dogs and is respectful. Iām boarding a dog currently for a couple weeks who is human and dog aggressive and theyāre both respecting one anotherās space and thereās been no issue. Monroe has tried to engage her in play, but thatās a hard no from her. I've also sent him to spend some time with a trainer so we could really dig deep on his dog/people tolerance and he's 100% rock steady and just a superstar. If he's not comfortable with a person or dog, he'll just avoid. He's not cat tested, but he's such a sweet guy I can't imagine him having any issue with a cat.

Important to research the Min Pin breed if you're not familiar. They are a very unique breed of dog and need adopters that fully understand their sometimes complex but incredibly dedicated personalities.

Monroe was living in a home with many Miniature Pinscher's, none that were spayed/neutered. The original owner did say Monroe bit him when Monroe and another stud got into a dog fight and the owner tried to break them up. No medical care was needed. But always important to be transparent on a dogs history when known. And this is what the shelter told me about Monroe's intake form.

Monroe is such a gentle soul but yes, all dogs can bite in situations. I personally won't hold this one against him. If you have females in heat and studs rallying for that female, dog fights are going to happen.

If you are a work from home or home most often, patient person, looking for a super loyal companion, Monroe should be considered.

Monroe wouldnāt thrive in a home with kids under 13. He needs a calmer energy space in an adult only home. Do I think he can hang out with visiting kids? Absolutely 100%. Would he want kid energy 24/7. I don't think so.

Monroe is an amazing companion, once he knows you're his friend. He's just a really, really nice boy. Just needs to grow his confidence which may never happen. As noted, being suspicious is a Min Pin thing. I really love this dog a lot and he deserves the most amazing home ever.

SCHEDULE:

FOOD: Monroe was eating Royal Canin small breed kibble. He has a good healthy appetite & isn't a fussy eater. He's was eating 3/4 cup per day. He also gets some fruits & veggies. And occasional bully treats when he's an exceptional boy.
Monroe was switched to Tom & Sawyer Gently Cooked Dog Food, as they offered to sponsor all his meals while he's in foster care. Monroe is a big fan of his Tom & Sawyer meals and GOBBLES them up! Tom & Sawyer is nutritionally balanced canine food with recipes that are healthy & prepared specifically for canines. This no muss, no fuss food has Monroe's heart, so Tom & Sawyer has agreed to extending a lifetime 25% discount to any adopter that wants to keep Monroe on their diet. His adopter can also transition him to kibble (Royal Canin small breed), but keep Tom & Sawyer as a topper to the kibble to keep the nutrition high and satisfy his palate.

SLEEP: he sleeps through the night, crated, though he did sneak out of his crate and found his way into my bed once. He'll protest a minute at bedtime, as he's prefer to be curled up with you, but he'll go to sleep quick enough. He loves to curl up and burrow under a blanket.

EXERCISE: Monroe is quite anxious outdoors. Always suspicious. He'll run a bit ahead, but always comes straight back to me to check-in (leashed). He has a weird habit of jumping up once and grabbing your sleeve for a split second then releasing. He doesn't bite or nip or even mouth. It's a quick release. But he does it on walks. He'd prefer I carry him mostly outside, but that doesn't happen. He can walk like the big boy he is.

CAR RIDES: Monroe does great in the car. If he can safely sit on the middle console he's happiest, so he can touch you. But he travels well crated in the backseat where he's safest. Or tethered in the passenger seat which is his 2nd favourite place to be, still close to you.

------------------------------------

ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
