Meet Mitch - Adoption Fee Reduced!

Meet Mitch! Mitch is approximately 1 year old and is a Super Mutt! (See DNA test results in his photos!!!). He was found as a stray, so we don't know what his life was like before that.

Mitch did go into a foster home for about a month, but was not completely compatible with their other dog, so he was brought back to our shelter. During that stay, the family says that Mitch was an absolutely great dog! He did well for baths and body handling, he loved to snuggle and play and then snuggle some more, and was a great walking/jogging buddy! And, most of the time, he and their other dog were best buddies! However, he did get insecure towards the other dog when it came to his food and toys, or anything he thought belonged to him, so we are going to recommend he go to a family who is experienced with these resource guarding behaviors if they have another dog. Otherwise, he'd be just fine as an only dog. He is NOT dog aggressive, and can be safely walked and go on family adventures - he simply likes to claim certain things within his home environment. He did not show this behavior towards humans - only other dogs.

This boy is one of the sweetest, kind-hearted dogs you could meet. He can be a little insecure and timid in new situations or around new people, so we ask that only people who have patience and understand will apply for him...he may take a few extra days to decompress and settle into his new home; but when he does, he is SUCH a joy! He's so incredibly snuggly and loves to just wrap up with you on the couch or the floor - he just adores his caretakers!

Mitch is pretty submissive with people. He likes to play, but can be easily overwhelmed with dogs that are overly crazy or don't have good manners when they introduce themselves. He is active and would likely prefer to live with another dog who he can play with and would likely benefit from it, especially if it's a dog who is well socialized that he can learn from. He did live with a cat in his temporary home and while he never harmed the cat, he did like to chase it - he may prefer to live without kitties unless his family is prepared to work with him on this behavior.

Mitch appears to be potty trained, but just to help with his transition we do recommend utilizing a crate in his new environment. He's got a good energy level which means he'd love to go with you walking/hiking/jogging but is also not necessarily hyperactive. (More energy is possible to come out when he's fully comfortable in his new home!)

If you're looking for a sweet-tempered, playful and loving medium-sized dog to add to your family, Mitch is your guy! (Please don't be put off if he's shy around you at first meet...this is normal for him). He is fully vaccinated and neutered. Weight 48 lbs. His adoption fee has been reduced to $50.00

**Mitch is Heartworm Positive and already in treatment. During his heartworm treatment, Mitch will require a sedentary lifestyle, daily medication and monthly injections at our vet clinic. Adopters can be his "Foster Family" during this time so that we are able to cover the cost of the veterinary treatments.

Appointments can be made for you to meet Mitch after an adoption application has been approved. Please email us at monroecountydogshelter@gmail.com for an application.
