Melissa's Story

About 10 to 12 months old in May 2007, Melissa is a sweetheart. A Border collie/fox terrier mixed-breed, she and her mom, Joan, were accepted by Illinois Humane from animal control from the home of a person who had to be hospitalized frequently. Melissa is very sweet, but she hasn’t had a lot of nurturing socialization from humans.
She is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on shots and heartworm-negative. She is now on flea and heartworm preventatives.
Melissa is playful, good with other dogs and housebroken. She has accepted the crate more readily than one would expect considering she has spent most of her short life on the end of a chain in a back yard. Her playthings were rocks (that she bopped around like soccer balls and then would pounce on and bite), chasing her tail, and flipping her empty metal food bowl into the air and watching it hit the ground and make noise!
Melissa is a bit hand shy when people go to pet her, but she is in a foster home and the couple and their two children are working on building trust and letting her like the touch of a human hand.
Melissa is a bit more laid-back than her mom, especially considering her being younger. She is quite pretty and would probably enjoy dog sports such as agility or flyball.
To visit with Melissa please join us at our off-site adoptions at PetCo, 2721 S. Veterans Parkway, Springfield, Ill., on the first and fourth Sundays of each month or the second and third Sundays at Springfield’s PetsMart on Veterans Parkway. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at PetCo. If that doesn't match your schedule, please call Illinois Humane at (217) 698-3804 to arrange for a visit with Melissa. She is waiting to meet you.
ILLINOIS HUMANE . . . CARING PEOPLE . . .
