Meet Melchor
Say hello to Melchor, a stunning young mixed breed boy with soulful eyes and a gentle spirit. Melchor, his sister Khalifa and brother Balthasar made their way to us in Oregon from Bucerias, Mexico, just outside of Puerto Vallarta, through our amazing rescue partner who works tirelessly to save street dogs in need. Now, he's ready to leave his past behind and find the forever home he deserves.
Recent Foster Feedback for Melchor:
Melchor is a very special pup with a calm, gentle presence that's rare for his age. While he still has typical puppy energy and curiosity, he presents more like an older dog-grounded and observant. That said, he's still learning the ropes and will thrive with a patient, encouraging adopter who can continue guiding him as he gains confidence in the world.
He's incredibly eager to please and responds well to redirection and positive reinforcement. His loyalty is clear-he bonds closely with his person and loves praise more than treats, especially when he's feeling unsure.
Melchor can be a bit wary around new men, and so men who are more calm and gentle willing to take intros very slowly with patience might be better suited unless it's a female-only household. Once he understands someone is safe, he melts into cuddles and affection. He also tends to get anxious in new situations, especially on walks, and really benefits from the presence of a calm, confident dog companion. He looks to his foster dog sibling Tammy for reassurance and follows her lead, which has been both helpful and heartwarming.
He's been great with the children he's met, including a lively 2-year-old, showing gentle and patient behavior. Melchor prefers a calm home environment where he can continue to build trust and feel secure.
He's shown no signs of aggression toward the household cat or chickens, though interactions have been limited and carefully managed so far. He's learning to go potty on walks (yay, progress!) but still prefers going off-leash in the backyard. He's had zero accidents indoors.
Crate training is a work in progress. He's not a fan yet, but we're making it a positive space with praise and encouragement. His foster dog friend Tammy even hangs out in there to show him it's a safe, cozy place. He hasn't been destructive in the home and is building up to longer stretches alone as we work on his independence.
Melchor is a sweet, soulful pup who just needs a bit of time and guidance to come into his own. With the right match, he's going to be an incredibly loving, loyal, and gentle companion.
Melchor's Story:
Melchor is one of three surviving pups from a litter of nine, originally found by road construction workers who spotted their brave mama constantly moving them to keep them safe from the heavy machinery. By the time help arrived, only three puppies remained, and their mother had vanished. Melchor has proven himself to be a survivor-and now he's thriving in foster care, playful, loving, and ready for his new life.
A Few Things About Melchor:
Sweet and affectionate, he's your classic cuddle-loving pup
Loves to play and explore-he's curious and ready for fun
Social and eager to bond with his people
Expected to be medium-sized when full-grown
His past may be tough, but his future is wide open-and full of promise
Melchor is looking for a kind, patient family who will continue to show him how wonderful life can be. He's the kind of pup who will grow into a loyal, loving companion with the right guidance and lots of love.

steps to adopting
(OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS ARE IN SEPARATE TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES BETWEEN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON AND THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA. THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)
The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.
To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee of $550. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.
Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
