Meet Maya

Unfortunately, Maya is being returned to us. While she is a very loving squishy girl, she has continued to show her family over the years that she’s dog selective. She lives in a home with a small dog and gets along with him most of the time, but has initiated altercations with him. Her family no longer wants to deal with her dog selective behavior. From what her mom says, she doesn’t know why Maya behaves this way as she can cause an altercation with another dog she’s known for a long time and be fine with that dog afterwards. She can also be best friends with other dogs without incident. Having and crate and rotating a dog who isn’t always friendly with other dogs doesn’t fit the family’s lifestyle, so we were contacted to let us know she needs to find somewhere else to live. LARC takes our dogs back if their adopters are no longer able to keep them and Maya is no exception. Maya’s return is just more difficult because we need to find her a forever or foster home where she can be the only dog or be willing to crate and rotate. Thankfully, her family understands finding placement will take time, but given the current frustration the family is feeling and Maya’s potential behavior, we need to move her out of her home sooner rather than later. Please no negative comments about her family. While this isn’t the outcome anyone wanted, it’s happening and her family is entitled to their feelings and to return her. We need to make this transition as easy for everyone, including Maya, as possible.

Dana, LARC’s VP and professional dog trainer, will be visiting Maya’s family to evaluate her and teach her family how to muzzle train. Muzzle training is never a bad idea even for a dog not displaying any type of negative behavior. We’re hoping Dana’s visit will help Maya’s family feel more comfortable as we look for a place for her to go.
