Meet Maya

Maya has had three years of hell. She is ok now, in foster care and we have given her all the medical and time needed to feel whole. Maya lived outside and had multiple litters, we learned that her litters died by heat or froze in the winter. When she was turned over to us, she had recently given birth and every inch of her was infested with ticks. Her prior family told us that she is about three years old, having had four litters. The following if from Maya's foster mom, please read:

Maya has been such a great foster pup and I know she will make the right family very happy. Maya does great in the house; she loves nothing more than napping in one of her beds while her human is near. Maya is not a dog who loves to cuddle. She will allow you to give her belly rubs and pet her but when she is done she will walk away and make herself comfortable somewhere else. I think she will do best with a family that respects her boundaries and lets her decide the pace of affection. Maya makes you work for her trust, given the circumstances she was rescued from I don't blame her. Given that introduction to new people is something that takes time and patience from her humans. She also must meet any dogs that may already live in the house, we have had mixed reactions to dogs from her. Maya is definitely a dominant dog and we have seen her trying to dominate little dogs. Never outright aggression but for the wellbeing of Maya and the other pups I believe it is important. Maya is not able to be around cats, she has a very high prey drive and actively searches (sometimes more like hunts) and goes after cats in the neighborhood. We have not been able to see how Maya acts around children so I am not sure about that, but I would recommend she meets all children that will be around her in her daily life. Maya loves going on walks and to the park and generally just being outside. She will need some work on the leash as she is a puller but she would do best with a family that can commit to walking her at least once a day. Maya sleeps well through the night, she moves between her crate and her bed, we have never allowed her in the human bed but she does not seem to even be interested in it. She will lay on the couch but only if there is no one else on it and only for a short period of time, she truly prefers her beds and crates around the house.
Maya must be crated when new people come into the home as she has shown some protection of the home. Maya loves playing with her toys and chewing on a good bully stick. She has been mixed on training. She will take treats and work for a short period of time but when she decides she is done she will no longer work or take treats (this is her stubborn side haha). She has done great with a pretty consistent routine and I believe this is important to continue in her forever home.
