Meet Mateo

The Meximutt Project is on a mission to help Mexico’s street dogs! Established in 2019 under the Portland-based organization Born Again Pit Bull Rescue, we now support 1,000+ dogs each year through free spay/neuter programs, adoptions, food, and medical care.

In Mexico over 70% of the 18 million dogs are estimated to live on the street. By adopting a Meximutt, you will not only be welcoming a loving companion but also supporting our efforts to control the street dog population and help thousands of dogs in need.

============================================

“MATEO” is currently in Guadalajara, Mexico in foster care. We are listing this dog for adoption now so that we can find him/her the perfect family BEFORE arriving to Oregon. Once we have an adopter lined up for this dog, we will book a flight to PDX. Please note: It can take 2-4 weeks to arrange for the dog to fly to Oregon due to the CDC and USDA customs import paperwork.

NAME: Mateo

AGE: 1 years old (estimated by our veterinarian based on their teeth).

WEIGHT: 15 lbs

BREED: Poodle - Chihuahua (DNA test results in photos)

DOGS: Yes

CATS: Yes

KIDS: Yes, but please remember that kids need to know to be respectful of the dog’s space, bodies, and toys/food.

ABOUT: When Mateo first joined our foster family, his past was written all over his trembling body. Rescued from a hoarding situation in Chapala, Mexico where he likely faced abuse, this sweet boy was a bundle of nerves - startling at the slightest sound, seeking refuge under beds, and refusing to eat anything for days.

But Mateo's story is one of resilience and hope. In just a few weeks, we've watched him blossom into a playful, affectionate companion.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of Mateo's personality is his deep desire to love and be loved. Even on his more anxious days, you'll find him timidly approaching for head scratches and belly rubs, his need for affection outweighing his apprehension.

From day one, Mateo found a kindred spirit in his foster dog sister. They became inseparable, spending their days playing together, exchanging kisses (licks), and taking cozy naps curled up side by side. Mateo has proven himself to be quite the gentleman, happily sharing both his food and toys with his sister and being the patient older brother when she bothers him with her antics.

Mateo is the perfect companion for a trip to a dog-friendly restaurant, where he will sit quietly at your feet for hours, or for a leisurely stroll in the park. One of his charming quirks is his ability to grumble under his breath while maintaining a perfectly straight face - a skill that never fails to make us laugh. He's also mastered the art of becoming a perfect foot-warmer, often curling up on our feet during cozy TV sessions.

An ideal home for Mateo would be one in which he's not left alone for extended periods. He gets separation anxiety, especially when his foster dad is away from home (even if his foster mom is with him). We think this is due to having previously been owned by a man, since this doesn't happen when foster mom is away from home.

He'd thrive in a home with another friendly dog, but he'd also probably be okay being a solo dog as long as he has constant company.

He is now mostly potty trained, though he appreciates 3-4 outdoor breaks a day. He definitely prefers having some wet food or toppers over his kibble (who can blame him), but generally has a good appetite and is not too difficult in the food department.

Mateo is ready to find his forever family - one that will provide a calm and loving environment in which he can blossom into the confident, joyful dog he was always meant to be. With love, patience, and positive reinforcement, we're sure Mateo will continue to grow in confidence and independence. Are you ready to be the missing piece in his story of love?
