Meet MARTY!

MEET MARTY!

This gorgeous black dog is beautiful inside and out. He found his way to City of Elderly Love after being abandoned by his former owner along with another senior dog and brought to Philly's animal control shelter. Now both Marty and his former housemate (Jasmine) are safe in foster care and hoping to land the perfect homes.

Marty was the more sensitive of the two from the start. It took him some time to decompress from the scary shelter-system and whatever had happened prior to being surrendered. It took a couple weeks for Marty to replace his crying and sadness with tail wags and kisses. But now that he's fully settled in, he's the sweetest, silliest dog! He's a gentle guy who sticks to his foster people like glue. He spends most of his day following around his foster mom and napping belly up in her office while she’s working. He doesn’t jump, bark, or beg, and he’s very respectful of everyone’s space. He’s shown no signs of resource guarding, and he takes treats so gingerly he could be trusted around small fingers. He will not smother you with affection, but instead will stand next to you patiently waiting for you to offer. He has a big ol’ head that he loooves to be pet. He also has a giant tail that acts as a clear barometer for his happiness, and when he is happy that tail will go! Marty is house trained and a dream on a leash, he’s got a lot of pep in his step but hardly pulls (unless he sees a bird, he really likes birds). He also gets along very well with other cats and dogs and pays little attention to them.

Marty is still a bit timid around new people and places, but he’s shown no signs of aggression, when he gets nervous he will just dart away. It doesn’t take Marty very long to come around and trust new people. A few gentle head pats and a treat or two is all it takes for him to open up and settle in next to you. However, due to his timidness we wouldn’t recommend a home with small children, as quick unpredictable movements still make him nervous.

I’m addition to working on his comfort level, his foster mom has also been working with him to help him overcome his separation anxiety. He’s so attached to his people that he gets quite upset when they go somewhere without him, and this anxiety has lead to some destruction. He needs to be kept in a heavy duty crate to keep him safe while his people are out, but having the right crate has eliminated the destruction entirely and he has no problem going in the crate when you need to leave. His foster parents are continuing to work on his separation anxiety, but having a sturdy, Marty-proof crate will be a crucial component for success in his forever home.

If you are willing to be patient and allow Marty to open up on his terms, you will find him to be the most loyal, loving companion you’ve ever had!
Marty is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Besides some age-related joint stifffness, he's in good health! Interested in adopting him?
