Meet Marcy

Every day we are inundated with rescue requests from shelters and individuals. We can only say yes to so many and the ones we have to turn away break our hearts. Certain dogs tug on our heartstrings and we know we have to help them. Sweet Marcy is one of those dogs. That’s her shelter photo on the left. Poor girl looks so scared and defeated, laying on that cold concrete floor. Little did she know that ending up in that particular shelter on that particular day was her ticket to a better life; the life she deserved all along.

Marcy is a 50+ lb Black Lab/Hound mix and she’s an older gal, probably 10-12 years old. A lifetime of neglect left her emaciated, flea-ridden, and heartworm positive. Her coat was sparse and her skin was raw from years of malnutrition and scratching. Many of her teeth were broken and ground down, probably from chewing to free herself from a metal enclosure or chain. Marcy was not spayed and probably had many pups in her lifetime. As is common in unspayed females, she developed multiple mammary tumors. Sadly, some of them were malignant.

Marcy has been with us for five months. Hundreds of dollars have been spent restoring her health, and more importantly, her spirit. She’s been vaccinated and microchipped and all of the parasites she once had (inside and out) are now gone. She’s been through the difficult and lengthy heartworm treatment process and is now heartworm-free. She’s been spayed and had her teeth cleaned. Her mammary tumors have been removed and she had x-rays done yesterday to ensure that the cancer had not spread elsewhere in her body. Thankfully, no cancer was seen anywhere in her chest or abdomen at this time, though she will need to be monitored regularly.

For the first time in her life, Marcy is happy, healthy and her future is bright. Her senior bloodwork looks great and she’s feeling fantastic. These days, you can find her lounging on the sofa at her foster home, keeping foster mom company while she works on her laptop. Marcy has a newfound love for stuffed toys and she plays with them all day long. Foster mom says that first thing every morning, Marcy collects all of her “babies” and carries them to the sofa one by one. She loves her 4-legged foster sister and she plays gently with her. We have learned over time that Marcy thrives in the presence of at least one other dog. In her first foster home there were only kitties, and Marcy was terribly depressed there. When we moved her to a foster home with other dogs, she sprang to life. Her personality and confidence blossomed, clearly the result of being with her own kind. For this reason, we are requiring that Marcy go to a home with at least one other dog.

Marcy is quite easygoing and well-mannered. She’s both housebroken and crate-trained. She needs a fenced yard because she is modest and will not go potty on a leash. Marcy spent most (if not all) of her life outdoors previously, but she is very much a house-dog now. She wants to be close to her people and has no interest in being outside unless she has human company. Good for her, we say. That’s exactly as it should be.

We are so proud of how far Marcy has come. She truly deserves nothing but the best from here on out. If you can give this gentle, kindhearted gal the loving retirement home she has earned, please apply to adopt Marcy at www.sohfga.com.

Marcy is fully vetted -- spayed, microchipped, heartworm negative, and current on vaccinations and deworming. The adoption fee is $250. We accept payment in the form of cash, CashApp and Zelle. You can apply to adopt by submitting an application at www.sohfga.com.
