Meet Major

Meet Major! Major is a young (maybe around 2 years old), Hound/probably Catahoula mix. He was found on the side of the road back in January and taken in by a nice lady who reached out for help. He was absolutely starved weighing only about 19lbs. He was literally skin and bones. He had wounds at every bony prominence on his body and every spot that should have been filled with soft tissue was sunken- between his ribs, his head and face, even the spots between his toes. He was a (barely) walking skeleton. He was weak and could only hold himself up for short amounts of time. He had to be carried up and down the stairs. He was cold to the touch, even inside of his mouth. His gums were white. His teeth were disgusting and his breath smelled like death. His coat was patchy and dull and his ears were shredded. Even being so close to death, Major has been the most loving guy and has craved human touch and affection. He had a light in his eyes and a wag in his tail that told us he wanted to live so we helped him fight. Today, 5 months later, Major is happy, healthy and learning how to dog. His personality is growing each day. He is playful, goofy, excited and loyal. He loves to run and chase a ball. His zoomies are the BEST and will make you laugh every time. He has not met another dog that he doesn’t want to be besties with even if they want nothing to do with him. He is spoiled and deserves to be. He does fine in a crate and sometimes takes himself there for some quite time but prefers to be by his humans side. He loves to eat. He is very smart and eager to please. He walks excellently on a leash and knows some basic commands. He is a great car rider. He is house trained.

Things a potential adopter should know. Major has essentially gone backwards in his development so even though he is a little older than a puppy, he is very much puppy-like right now. He is discovering new things every day and testing his limits. He will need a family that will keep him stimulated and active. He will need an outlet to spend all his new found energy. He is mouthy and will chew on your arms and hands while getting you to play. He does jump when he gets excited to see his person. Due to having to scavenge he needs to be supervised with soft toys. He loves to tear them apart and pull the stuffing out like any other dog but if given the chance he will sometimes try to eat the material. He is getting much better with this though as he is fed and full now but don’t leave your stinky gym clothes on the floor. He would love another dog in his new home. The other dog must be either super laid back or very tolerant of Major as he learns. He is good at taking social cues but his desire to be loved and play definitely makes it hard for him to take a hint from other dogs. He will choose his person in the home. He will love every one but if you are the chosen one you need to be prepared. He will be your shadow. He will lay at your feet when you cook dinner. You will trip over him frequently. He will stare at you while you shower and sometimes invite himself in. He will not accept you being behind a closed door and will try to sit on your lap when you are on the toilet. He will lay across you on the couch and wake you up by slapping you in the face and nudging your arm until it flys over him forcing you to snuggle. He will clean your ears and your eyes. If your other dog comes near you he will simply shove his way between the two of you to make sure he isn’t losing out on any attention. He likes to be picked up and held like a toddler. He is pushy, persistent and annoying and wants to be inside of your soul. He has an over abundance of love to give whether you want it or not. Major is good with kids but due to his lack of awareness for personal space we think older, sturdier kids would be a better fit. We are working on jumping on counters and not begging when food is around but that hunger is still in him. He is not food aggressive and eats fine with his doggo foster sister but is greedy and given the chance he will clean your plate for you. Overall Major is an amazing dog that needs an adopter that is okay and tolerant with his insecurities and remembers where he came from. He needs someone that is active and will let him live his best life and give him all of the experiences he craves. We think he would love hiking and visiting places like the White Water Center and breweries and any other place that allows dogs. He thrives being around people and other dogs. He aims to please.

Please only apply if you are serious and ready for all of this. Major is special and amazing and has walked through hell to get to the point that he is at. He deserves only the best and that is what we are determined to find for him.
