Magic Australian Cattle Dog / Blue Heeler Mix Cincinnati, OH

The stress of the shelter is difficult for every dog, but is especially trying for those with the super smarts and physical abilities of the herding breeds. They have their challenges, but provide them with the mental and physical workout they crave, and you’re pretty much guaranteed love and devotion like you’ve never known!

This brindled beauty arrived at STAF recently from a rural county shelter. She had been found as a stray and sadly was never claimed. Magic is around 2 years old and weighs about 40 pounds. She looks like she could have some Australian cattle dog and possibly some shepherd in her mix. She has adorable antennae-like ears that can’t quite decide if they want to stand up or not!

Magic recently got some R&R away from the shelter in a volunteer's house: "What an angel. She was very comfortable in the surroundings of a home and acted like she belonged from the moment she arrived. She chirped at the door to the room where two of my cats were meowing but otherwise she was quiet as a mouse. She relaxed and chewed on an elk antler and lounged next to my desk while I worked. She then fell asleep and took a big fat nap."

And this from another volunteer: “Magic was thrilled to go to the park. She is a smart dog with lots of energy. She just LOVES people! Every person we passed at the park was a thrill for her and she would get excited to say hello as soon as a person came into view. Magic needs some leash training but improved so much in just our trip today to the park. She loved all the smells and sights. Magic was friendly with all the dogs we passed and is a contact player, jumping and wrestling about. She is high energy and will benefit from a home experienced with herding breeds - but she is smart and responsive to structure. She would make a great running partner and companion. Magic is sweet, active and a lot of fun! Her spirit is guaranteed to lift yours!”

Magic is super smart and will be a wonderful addition to an active home that loves to take long hikes and give her plenty of play time. Voted our shelter's "Best Running Buddy!" We bet she would also be a natural at agility. She loves being with and playing with other dogs but can be a tad reactive with these same dogs when there is a fence in-between them … we see this lot at STAF. Magic loves to play fetch and tug of war. We can’t wait to find her a perfect forever family!

Magic’s estimated birthday is February 2017
Magic will need: An active home that gives her plenty of exercise. A home committed to positive based training.
Magic will love: A fenced backyard to run in and a maybe a playmate or daycare to help her get her daily dose of exercise.

You must be 21 years or older to adopt a dog from STAF

We require a physical fence for homes with children under the age of 11. We also may require a physical fence for specific dogs on a case-by-case basis, depending on each dog's behavior and exercise needs.

Invisible fences - Due in part to increasing coyote activity/incidents in the area and the difficulty of predicting how a dog will respond to invisible fence training--we cannot adopt to homes with invisible fences.

We do request vet and personal references.

At this time, we are only able to consider applicants within 75 miles of Cincinnati.
