Mable's Story
Meet Mable. She is believed to be a mix of Shar-pei or Chow and Beagle. Mable came to us in late winter of 2022 after living for over a year outside on a chain, with no fence to provide her a safe space. Can you imagine a 3-month-old puppy at the end of a chain? It's heartbreaking to think about. She was always alone and isolated, growing up in those conditions.

The family that adopted Mable from the shelter decided to surrender her back to the same shelter to get a new puppy. Their reasoning for keeping Mable as an outdoor dog was that she would not potty train properly. When they surrendered her, they described her as "aggressive."

Upon her surrender, Mable displayed many fearful, reactive behaviours toward people. Additionally, she required corrective surgery for cherry eye and an inverted eyelid, undergoing a total of seven surgeries due to severe neglect. The outcome of each surgery was uncertain until she healed. Thankfully, the fourth surgery gave us progress, which was successful, improving her vision by the seventh surgery, giving her a nice facelift. More importantly, the ability to see.

Since Mable's medical needs occupied a year plus, each surgery progressed her physical health, allowing us time to work on her emotional healing at the same time. Mable is capable of love and is a motivated dog who gives her whole heart if she is given the time to connect.

Our focus was on exposure—introducing her to as many humans as possible and integrating her into the pack at the Sanctuary. This process helped her learn to be a dog. The simple joy of toys made her incredibly happy, and she learned how to play in doggie play groups. Mable was never aggressive; she just needed assurance. Although she can still be shy, she is now willing to engage. She lacked socialisation and understanding of body language, having missed out on much due to her past living conditions.

For the first 6-8 months, we concentrated on basic obedience training while allowing her to follow other dogs and learn from them. Mable is sweet and active. Though she can be slightly shy, she becomes comfortable and happy when she is with other dogs. This environment helps her let her guard down and follow their lead. She loves to play and has a silly, quirky side that makes her blend into the pack effortlessly. Mable walks excellently on a leash, and her recall is great, but due to her history of being kept on a leash, we prefer a fenced yard for her safety. Apartment living is acceptable, provided she gets daily exercise. She thrives on snuggling and cuddling, requiring both human and dog interaction. Mable is a follower who needs a pack, as she cannot be the only pet. We have tried, but her energy and insecurity were too much.

Mable is a couch potato at heart, but she receives proper physical and mental exercise. She is house-trained and crate-trained, although stress can lead to more frequent potty breaks. Being in a crate makes her feel secure, so we provide her with that option.

**All Adoptions Include:**
- Spayed/Neutered
- Rabies Vaccination (1 or 3 years)
- All Age-Appropriate Core Vaccinations (including Lepto & Corona, 1 or 3 years)
- Heartworm-tested (Negative)
- Monthly Heartworm, Flea, and Tick Prevention
- Lyme Disease Tested (Negative)
- Dewormed and faecal tested (Negative)
- All testing completed within 6-12 months
- All age-appropriate care (blood work, dental care, testing, and medications)
- Lifetime Microchip Registration with free unlimited updates
- Quality protein diet

**Adoption Processing:**
- The adoption application review can take up to 3 weeks.
- A minimum of two meet-and-greets are required before adoption.
- A home check must occur.
- Out-of-state adopters are welcome at their expense.
- We do NOT ship any adoptable pets.
- Adoption fees are due at the time of adoption.
- No exchanges or requests for money are required before adoption.
- No payment plans available.

**For AHRS Former Adopters:**
- No adoption fee is required; a donation of your choice is expected, encouraged, welcome, and appreciated.

Training is an ongoing process and must be addressed daily.
