Meet Lyric

Sweet Lyric is a yellow Labrador Retriever, female puppy born April 27/22

Lyric's spay surgery is pending due to her young age, and her contract will require her new family to return her to our vet located in Elmira ON, at our expense, for her surgery.

Her contract also requires registration with an approved trainer to set her and her new family up for success.

PLEASE READ ENTIRE PROFILE BEFORE APPLYING

Medium to High energy
Lyric loves running in the back yard playing with her foster's other dogs. Due to her young age which limits safe exercise duration, Lyric walks around the block for about 10 to 15 minutes a day to work on her socialization and training.

We have been working on sit, waiting for meals, walking on the leash, recall, not barking outside too much, and settling in a crate. Lyric is very food motivated which helps with her positive reinforcement training.

Lyric loves other dogs and is being fostered in a home with multiple large breed dogs. When excited in play she does bark at the other dogs in play but gets along great with all dogs and is not showing any signs of reactivity nor guarding behaviours.
She has also been good with other dogs who have come to visit her foster home.

Lyric was initially nervous meeting new people in new environments due to her previous lack of socialization opportunities prior to joining our rescue, but has since blossomed into a sweet girl excited to meet all respectful humans and dogs

HOUSETRAINED? No-we are still working on this.

CRATE TRAINED? Yes Lyric is getting better with her crate. She may cry for a bit however settles down. She is more willing to go into the crate on her own with treats.

Lyric requires a family who is home often (not just lunch breaks) in order to continue to work on her housetraining, socialization skills and to keep this busy puppy entertained both mentally and physically.

Lyric is just learning leash skills at 4 months. She is working on heel. She doesn't pull on her leash. She does need more work due to previously living in a barn at a commercial breeder with no training.

OKAY WITH MANIPULATIONS? Yes
Lyric loves being pet. I can touch her ears, tail, paws, etc with no reaction.
Lyric is a happy, busy girl with the sweetest temperament. She is much less fearful of the world now and has grown in confidence.

THINGS NEEDING IMPROVEMENT? Lyric is a 4 month puppy who is still working on house training - down, wait, stand, etc. She is about 75% house trained and needs more exposure to places, people, and things outside the home/back yard environment to become socialized and more confident. Lyric still has fear around car rides and being put into the car. Lyric also needs redirection when she chews inappropriate house hold items and baseboards, etc. Lyric is an age appropriate 4 month old puppy who is very smart and coming along quite nicely with her training.
She, like most Lab puppies, can be destructive if bored or left alone outside of her crate, and should be crated in a large crate while her people are not home.

Lyric is fed near two other Lab puppies with no issues with supervision. They all sit and wait for their meals. Lyric needs to be sitting until her foster puts the food dish down in front of her and says OK.
We are still working on this and it is about 2 seconds between putting the dish down and releashing her to eat.

POTTY HABITS: Lyric goes out every hour or so
She is good about going outside. Lyric has yet to let me know that she needs to go potty and will have pee accidents in the house. Lyric goes through the night without needing to go outside for a potty break.

BED TIME HABITS? Lyric goes to bed in her crate around 11 pm and sleeps until about 7 pm.

We have a pretty standard routine of breakfast, play, rest, lunch, play, rest, dinner, play/walk, and then settling until bedtime. I work from home so recommend having a dog bed near you as she loves to be close to her people.

QUIRKS/CHALLENGES/AREAS NEEDING IMPROVEMENT: Lyric is a puppy so needs training. She gets very barking when over stimulated and is still learning to settle herself down when tired.

When Lyric first came, she would nip my heels - this behaviour has greatly improved over the past two weeks. Lyric is still a bit of a jack in the box when trying to sit as she is excited for treats. All is very typical behaviour for her age and level of maturity.

STRENGTHS/AREAS THEY HAVE IMPROVED ON: Lyric is much better about settling in her crate and has learned to sit. She is good about settling with the other dogs and has gained confidence.

TRANSPORTATION? Lyric is seat belted when in the car. She doesn't like getting into the car and tries to get out at first. Once in the car and while driving, she is quiet and pretty settled. Definitely needs more practice with car travel. Lyric shows no reactivity to outside vehicles or people during travel.

Lyric would benefit from a young, playful, canine friend.

Lyric loves being with people so a household where she is not left for long periods of time, where she becomes part of the fun and goes places with the family.

At four months, Lyric will easily adapt herself into the life and routines of her adoptive family.
Lyric also needs a person who is committed to working with her ongoing training and socialization.

Lyric is super smart and will grow up to become an amazing dog with someone who will devote time to her training. Lyric is a busy girl who would benefit from an active family who wants a canine companion to join their pack.

Notes:
*Children must be over 10yrs (due to Lyric's size and puppy antics and need for ongoing training), respectful and dog savvy with previous experience with dogs in the home.
* Lyric requires another suitable canine companion in her home who is young enough to enjoy her energy.
*Must be located within Ontario Canada
*Inground/ground level Pools and ponds must be separately fenced from yard
