HISTORY: Susan McKagan came to us from our friends in Texas. Motley Zoo Animal Rescue was asked to find Susan McKagan a great forever family!
NOTES FROM FOSTER HOME: SUSAN MCKAGAN is a wonderful girl. Blind dogs see with their heart. Or something along those lines. I think Susan McKagan heard this in a Hallmark movie or something. So she takes that to "heart,"
Susan is sweet and affectionate and everything you could ask for in a pup. Since blind dogs do best with another dog in the home, Susan luckily found her partner for life in her BFF bulldog/pitbull mix, Duff McKagan. He's also her ESA and helps her when she gets anxious in new places or feels some separation anxiety. You wouldn't know she has any until you take Duff McKagan out of the picture and she's quite content as long as he's around. Susan can be a little nervous in new places until she acclimates to all of the new sounds and smells she's presented with. She is crate trained and sleeps in her crate at night. She can play a little rough for some small dogs as she can't see their corrections, but overall, she's great with dogs of all ages and can wrestle with the puppies and sleep with the elderly. She is learning not to jump....since blind dogs see with their paws and nose, they tend to jump on people in greeting for touch and smell and she gladly accepts warm hugs! She will need to learn new commands with her adopter such as Wall, Step, etc. to help her navigate the world successfully. She's an excellent 'mapper' but when walking her adopter will need to consistently teach her commands so that she won't run into walls or trip over curbs and go up or down stairs, etc.
Unlike her BFF, Duff, she can go to daycare where the other dogs can be monitored, as other dogs do not always appreciate blind dogs who can't see their cues. She's definitely NOT a dog park dog as we don't know how the other dogs will react to her and she could easily get hurt and would be unable to defend herself. So no dog parks for this girl, but she's good with a fenced backyard for her to run circles in while barking at her imaginary friends (but we won't talk about that...).
Susan LOVES her people, and they are a source of comfort and affection for her. She will trust you explicitly and greets you with a hug. While she does entertain herself and take naps while you work, sometimes she will stop in for a quick hug and a kiss to reassure herself that you're there even though she can hear you clacking away at the keyboard or on your super important zoom meeting. She gives sweet kisses rather than the sloppy ones her BFF gives. With the two of them, expect many kisses. She's very tactile and touches you often, whether with her paws or body. She loves to climb in bed and snuggle with you at the end of the day and when she's done playing with the other dogs, but more of a puppy pile type than a spooner.
She does love to be out and about, although hasn't learned to walk a straight line yet and looks like a drunk Lippizaner on a mission. Even though she can't see, Susan feels she should be leading... She bounces off her BFF frequently while she prances down the trail but he doesn't mind. She loves the smells that come with walking on the trails and she will definitely "see" the rabbit before anyone else. Basically, Susan McKagan is a spunky sassy girl who loves to play, loves to be in the backyard with the sun on her face and the mud under her feet, hanging out with her true love, Duff.
All dogs adopted from Motley Zoo come with a leash and Martingale collar (or a harness, if necessary), depending on each dog's particular needs.
ABOUT MOTLEY ZOO:
Motley Zoo Animal Rescue is a volunteer run, foster based, 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization based in Redmond, WA. Motley Zoo does not have a traditional shelter location, but instead, utilizes private foster homes which care for the animals individually, in a home environment, until a "furever" home is found.
Motley Zoo also runs "Rock Star Treatment" Dog Daycare & Training Studio in Redmond, WA which is a day-use facility and does not hold kennels of adoptable animals. The dogs there are owned animals who come to the facility while their families are at work and school so they can play and socialize in a safe environment. We dub this service our "Year-round" fundraising program which helps us support our rescue animals and the $15,000/ month vet bills we incur. This Studio location does have an Adoptable Cat Lounge, where cats may live until adoption, which is the exception to any aforementioned rules.
Please email email@example.com and request an adoption application so we can get you started on the journey to finding a new, furry friend! Once you have been approved to adopt, then we can set up a meeting with the animal you have been matched with.
