Meet Luka

******Please note, once completing the initial screen you will be connected with the placement for a video chat. Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved. If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time************

We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.

Luka, 18mo old, neutered male, blue merle Australian Shepherd, 45 pounds. Luka is in a foster home in Houston, TEXAS and can transport out of state once an approved adopter is lined up!

Luka and his brother Bluey were being given away in the parking lot of a grocery store one weekend day. The story goes that their parents' town home HOA gave them the ultimatum to get rid of the boys or face eviction so these fully-vetted, well-cared-for-by-a-private-vet, and pet-insurance-carrying boys found themselves loaded up with all their belongings waiting for someone to say 'Yes'. Had that Someone not agreed? They'd have been dumped on the streets...

Thankfully for the boys, one of our fosters with a particular fondness for Aussies called another of our fosters who grew up with Aussies and asked if she would foster and the rest is history (the good kind)!

These boys are your standard issue Aussies - whip smart, high energy, fun loving, playful and outgoing, and Stage 5 clingers when it comes to loving on Foster Mom. They live in a house with another 2 female Aussies, one 2yr old and the other 9yrs, and 2 small dogs (rat terrier/chi mix, poodle/terrier mix) and love to antagonize and terrorize (in the cute sibling way) one another while Mom works.

They're very smart and pick up commands but, like all Aussies, can be naughty if not given a job or task. Luka enjoys digging holes and shredding the bark off tress in the back yard, chasing balls and destroying any plushy toy that dares enter his realm.

He has a bad habit of counter surfing and is very food motivated/inquisitive/hungry, so he has to be kept away from anything that even remotely resembles a tasty snack (like Foster Sister's agility rosettes), otherwise it will be shredded across the living room in an explosion of confetti.

Luka is house and crate trained, walks well on a leash and has no issue with dogs big or small. We have no history with cats or kids, but given his prey drive for things that he can chase, we have to say no cats and probably no very little kids without proper supervision as he may knock them over in his exuberance to get in your lap for pets.

His ideal home would have breed experience and an eager desire for a working companion. Luka would thrive with lots of physical and mental enrichment, opportunities to expand and continue to develop his positive canine socialization skills, and having a "job" - whether scent/nose work, obedience or agility training, or even learning to be a therapy dog. Aussies make the best pets but they are not for the faint of heart or anyone who likes to feel smarter than their pet - after all, they're probably smarter than your Honors Student. ;-)

***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown. We rarely know a dog's exact age nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time. ***
