Loki’s time was up at a high kill shelter in Kansas. He was returned to the shelter because he jumped on the mom and put his mouth on a child. He did not break the skin with the child. Instead of choosing to train him and give him the attention that he needed they surrendered him to the shelter. Since he has been in a foster home, he has shown no signs of aggression. So, Loki is now a Waverly Pet Rescue dog. He is living in a foster home. He is up to date on shots, tested heartworm negative, and neutered.

Loki is a sweet, affectionate and smart dog! The day we first picked Loki up from the shelter you could tell he just wanted to love and be loved. It was pretty clear that he had been through a lot and was unsure of how to behave and what was expected of him. He would drag me around on his leash when we went on walks. He seemed very unsure about how to meet and interact with other dogs. He was also scared and apprehensive of normal everyday things like bicycles and lawnmowers like he had never seen them before. He had been pent up in the shelter without being handled or played with except very briefly by a local rescue that goes in to help the shelter dogs get rescued. He had been at the shelter for 30 days. He was skinny and very anxious from lack of exercise. Over the first week we got him out on walks and a lot of open field running to help him get the exercise he so badly needed. We fed him a lot of great food and got him started on supplements. Unfortunately, he ended up with kennel cough and was sick for about a week. As the weeks went by, he calmed down significantly. He got a lot of rest that he had so desperately needed. He was starting to feel safe and loved. His training was progressing well. He was doing well with simple commands. He learned well and is very smart. He catches on quickly. He loves his walks. He doesn’t need hardly any open field running anymore and prefers 2-3 walks a day. He loves to smell and explore on his walks and we encourage this. We have done some brief introductions with some of the balanced and well-trained neighbor dogs and he has been all tail wags and curiosity. We use only positive reinforcement training with Loki. What that means is a lot of treats and encouraging and rewarding good behavior and redirecting bad behavior. He still barks occasionally when people walk by the house with a dog but he doesn’t do it as much. He still gets excited in new situations. You need to be with him on a harness in these situations and make him sit. Within a couple minutes he calms down and all is well. He is continuing to do much better at calming himself down or re-directing his energy into a toy. He has some separation anxiety. It has gotten significantly better since we got him. The cure for this is as he continues to calm down and feel safe is keeping him in his kennel when you are gone. He loves his kennel and does very well with it. If he is left out of his kennel and you leave he will find something to chew on to calm his anxiety. We have not seen any food aggression or resource guarding issues but we do not have another dog. We have trained him to not have food aggression or toy guarding issues by taking things away from him and giving them back as a reward. He just wants to be with his people. He is so loving and caring. He is a big snuggle bug. He really is a sweet boy with a lot of love to give. Are you the family to give him a loving forever home?

He cannot be adopted into a home with small children, cats or smaller dogs. He would be ok in a home with older kind children that have dog experience. He is medium-high energy and has a medium-high prey drive. He needs to be adopted by someone that would continue his training. The adopters would also need to have experience with a dog that has medium-high energy and a medium-high prey drive.

Since he has been in a foster home with Waverly Pet Rescue, he has shown no signs of aggression. He will play bite and rough house but will stop if you ask him to. We actually discourage him from getting so excited that he play bites and instead have been teaching him to play without needing to jump and play bite. Working with him on re-directing his energy and teaching him the proper behaviors has transformed him into the well-behaved dog he was always meant to be.

All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters.
Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $300 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
