Link's Story

Link aka Linogon was a stray that found in NYC and brought to the New York Animal Care Centers - the New York City Municipal Shelter - brought in by the police.

We know stress plays an important part on these shelter dogs but reading his notes these points jumped out to us.

*He was trembling upon intake, and rightfully frightened. After spending a few months at the shelter, isolated most of the day and night in a lonely kennel, the stress and seclusion has worn him down, leading him to display signs of distress
*Lingon is observed to spin and chase his tail in kennel while panting heavily and standing on the bars vocalizing incessantly at the handler when in the kennel rooms.
*Lingon is observed bouncing off the walls of his kennel in a circle while barking. He stops when treat is offered and accepts treat that is tossed to him.

Then these from the volunteers:
*Huh?? Me?? That's Lingon's one upturned ear talking - isn't he just the cutest?! I fell in love with this handsome guy within 3 seconds of seeing him.
*Snuggly, cuddly, super social and very sweet, this little man has ears that he never grew into! LINGON's ears flip, they flop, they fly in the breeze on walks!

His time was up and he was next on the list for euthanasia and a foster stepped up to save his life. But she flaked out. What we did was send him to a board and train so he could brush up on his manners and got some serious training under his belt.

Then one of our existing fosters stepped in to foster him, literally saving his life. This is what he has to say:

Link is a very smart pup. I say pup because he is still a puppy. He’s small, 35-45lbs, and full of puppy energy. Approx 2 years old. Not destructive puppy energy to be sure, the kind that keeps me in shape. He loves walks and running full speed in my enclosed yard. He is crate trained and responds to “Link! Crate Up!” when he needs to be in his crate. Anyone who has ever cared for a puppy will recognize the puppy in him but also see all the potential he comes with. He is very trainable and I can vouch for that.

Link loves chew toys and nylabones. Outside he loves to carry a deflated basketball and toss it around the yard. He is very fast and keeps my other young dog in shape with all his high speed zoomies. Link is house trained, I have never once had an accident in the house. He knows how to sit for doors to open. He also sits for his food.

Links gets along with 3 other dogs larger than him in my house. He enjoys playing with the younger of the 3, the older boys tend to ignore him. He can play rough with my 5 year old dogs but easily sorted out when I step in. He sleeps in his crate at night and is quiet during bed time. He loves belly rubs and will lay next to the chair to get them for hours. Link is learning not to counter-surf and jump on people. He has really gotten really good at his impulse control but sometimes his high energy causes him to forget. Link walks good on his leash but wants to chase cats which I don’t allow. He also really wants to meet other dogs but I have not had any issues with those interactions. Link is a little possessive of kong toys I have noticed but I have not had any altercations because he only gets treats and toys in his crate.

Other than those points he really is a good boy. He is very handsome. His ears are awesome and his eyes are beautiful. He’s a fun and high energy puppy who learns fast. He would do best in a fenced in yard with human(s) who give him a lot of attention and continue his training. I am very happy to be a part of his rescue.
