Meet Lilac

Lilac may seem delicate as a flower, but this pocket pittie is hardy as a weed! Initially found wandering as a stray with another dog, we believe Lilac was still a puppy when she came into ARC. Besides having the energy level of a puppy, she lacked the social skills of an adult dog. Though loving with people, she had NO socialization with other animals and was initially very aggressive towards other dogs at the shelter. She also had no idea what it meant to wear a collar or walk on a leash, so walk times were challenging for staff as they continually had to redirect her or untangle her from her leash. She even seemed confused by eating out of her bowl, preferring instead to dump the food out and eat it bit by bit from the floor. But, with the patience and structure of shelter staff over the past six months, Lilac has improved immensely and grown up to be a "real dog". Shelter staff have worked with Lilac on her leash walking and socialization, making huge improvements! Trained to walk on a head-harness, Lilac walks beautifully for staff and is very responsive to "her person" when on walks, constantly checking in with her people and listening given commands when around other dogs or distractions. Staff has also worked to socialize Lilac with other dogs and she now has many "boyfriends" who she can walk with or go into the yard by. While we feel that Lilac will never be 100% "dog-friendly", especially with female dogs, she is respectful of other dogs while on leash and when in the yard. Lilac cannot be placed with cats or other small animals because of her prey drive. Lilac would thrive in a home of any type where she could be exercised daily and have continued training on with commands and consistent structure from "her people". While Lilac has been nothing but loving with staff (she allows staff to fawn over her and even pick her up for hugs!) we feel her energy and size would be too much for small children. At just over a year old, she is still very much a puppy and has energy to burn! Lilac is spayed, UTD on shots and will be microchipped upon adoption.
