Meet Letty

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

Sweet little Letty was picked up by Animal Control in Birmingham, AL, where she was held for weeks because the Birmingham shelter was very overcrowded with no room to take her in. Letty had a micro-chip and her family was contacted; yet, her people said they could not take her back. Seeing how sweet Letty is, the Shelter Manager asked if Sunshine might have room for her. Otherwise Letty had little chance of adoption, being a black, senior dog who needed heartworm treatment.

Only 7 years old and a nice medium size at 50 lbs, Letty is calm and friendly. She has a shiny black coat that gleams in the sun, and she loves to lie in the sun looking beautiful! Letty walks great on a leash and is good with every dog she has met. She keeps her kennel clean which is a good sign she is fully house trained. Her favorite things, that we have seen so far, are getting treats, and being petted and spoken to. She has no mobility issues and takes no medicine. Letty will be a terrific walking buddy!

Letty has been vaccinated, spayed, and is completing heartworm treatment. She is doing well with her treatment and will travel north in mid January. Don't wait to ask about Letty. She will be thrilled to go to her home after the holidays and be included in your winter fun. This good girl may have lost her family but we promised her a forever home where she will be cherished and loved.

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

If you would like to be part of Letty's rescue story, and you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact the Adoption Committee at: CandyVS2@aol.com to be considered to adopt sweet Letty.

Black Dog Syndrome
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by an adoption website, member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on the website.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these dogs and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

ABOUT OUR RESCUE
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters will be required to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may indicate that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are frequently getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and complete the application process so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on the observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters, and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will behave and adapt in your home.

A contract is signed on the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring their SGRR dog to a vet within 7 business days. All dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. However, if an adopter's vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog may be returned and a full refund would be provided.

Most of our dogs are fostered in private homes. We do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! To this end, the rescue retains an interest in each dog and our dogs can never be surrendered, re-homed, or sold. Should an adopter no longer be able to keep their SGRR dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer providing proper care. Adopters agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical care and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
