Meet Leo (fka Leon)

Meet Leo (FKA Leon):

I am about one year old and lived my early months roaming free in Mississippi, until a nice family starting looking out for me. I would go visit them at their house to play with their kids and dogs each day after their kids got home from school. They connected me to Brookline Lab Rescue, and I began my journey north. I was very thin when I got to Pennsylvania in November, but am healthy and have been gaining weight. Mealtime is my most favorite time of day, and I am beginning to learn the daily routine! I am mostly housetrained and sleep each night (10-7:30) in my crate. I had one accident, but we are working on our communication skills. I am hesitant to go into my crate, but can be encouraged with cheese, and then I settle down and go to sleep without much fuss. I have already learned some commands (sit, down, here, find it) am working on others (leave it, quiet, wait), and am eager to learn more. My second favorite time of day is when I am outside. I got to see snow recently and loved sticking my nose in it. I have times when I just like watching the world from my back porch, and other times when I just can’t get enough ball-chasing and running around.

I have bonded with all four members of my current family. I know which doors they use, and wait near them sometimes, particularly if I think they are coming back soon, or doing work outside. When one of my family leaves, I do whine a little because I miss them and want them to come back. I settle down after about 10 minutes.

I hope my forever home will be an active family who has dog experience, one who gets my excitement and understands when I am hesitant, and is eager to play with me, train me, and take me places. There are two boys (ages 8 and 12) in my foster home and I love to play and snuggle with them! I hope my new home has children too. I have played well with younger children in Mississippi, and could probably live in a home with younger children as long as my parents have experience managing a big goofball like me and my tendencies to get mouthy and sometimes treat children as my playmates. I am on my best behavior when I get lots of exercise. Lots and lots of exercise!

I’ve played with other dogs when I was in Mississippi and in the neighborhood in Pennsylvania. I would love to have a chance to play regularly with other dogs, or live with another playful dog. I haven’t been around cats except to bark at them and watch them in the neighborhood so I am not sure what I think of them.

My foster family lets me run on a 50-foot leash in the backyard, which is great but a fenced in yard where I could do some zoomies and chase tennis balls would be fantastic. I don’t always come when I’m called, as sometimes the other things I see are far more interesting. My current family doesn’t let me off my leash, so I am not sure what I would do. Also, I can run really fast! I like to go on walks a lot and do pull when I see people and dogs ahead of me, but I am practicing every day on walking better. I really like shoes and socks and mittens that my humans leave out – they smell delicious! I think they don’t want me to carry them around in my mouth, but it’s just so much fun! I leave other things like couch pillows and furniture alone. I love to chew on nylabones and carry around the soft dog toys with squeakers, and I haven’t torn any of those apart.

Are you looking for a walking, hiking, or jogging partner? Do you want a snuggle buddy? Then please consider me! I know I’ll do great at a new home with the right family!
