Meet Leo

Meet Leo~

1. Is he potty trained
2. Does he have any sign of aggression
3. Is he crate trained - what is his sleeping area
4. Is he on any medication
5. What type of food does he eat - wet/dry/mix
6. Is he leash trained?

Leo is only 7 months old and when I found him walking down the street he was an abused 3-4 pound puppy walking down a main road covered in poop with infected eyes dumping into the curb. His bottom was red swollen and his feet were red and raw ... it hurt for him to walk ( i have the pictures) his was about 6-8 weeks old.. it took us a good month to get his eyes, bottom and feet healed. After that we had to focus on the diarrhea and we did many test and didnt get an answer ... he has the best poop on nutro and his bowels go south when he eats anything low budget can or dry!!He has a sensitive stomach to junk fillers and colors. We spent months on his diet. Then when we thought life was shining a rainbow his bone gained an infection and he his eye would not heal properly.. so we tested him for Addison’s disease... (autoimmune) he didnt fit the criteria exactly!! He spent time preparing for a eye and leg removal.. after that he spent time healing.. Leo is only a precious 7 month old and all he knows is recovery. Life didnt give leo any breaks. He spent his first 7 months in a shelter environment! Bc his first owner through him out like trash. Leo has never slept in anything other than a crate or kennel.. Leo did have loving human kids that took care of him and he may have visited a bed here and there but for safety reasons Leo needed to stay quarantined bc of the high volume intake of other sick or contagious animals. he is NOT house trained bc he is 7mths .. some pups are trained in the first 7mths but Leo fought to survive.. Leo is/was leashed trained and while he does good on a leash he now must learn to leash walk with 3 legs. He needs an owner that can be trained to walk a newly 3 legged puppy? back legs are always harder.. Leo might not be ready for the parade yet... Leo is just now beginning his new life . Where he can finally learn all the cool training other puppies got to learn at a younger age , while he was in survival mode... aggression?? It was Leos happy heart, loving nature and sweet smile that kept US going through HIS recovery.. so many times euthanasia crossed our mind bc his mountains were to big to US! Leo proved us wrong and what we thought were mountains Leo treated them like ant hills, he is more than a conqueror.. He made hundreds of friends along the way.. vets, neighbors, cats, rabbits , pigs, other dogs and so many children. Leo is a mascot for Hope, Faith and Success here in the south ?? So with that being said I absolutely cannot answer the questions like 1.no 2.no 3. No 4.no 5.dry 6.no !! That would be unfair to a 7 mth old pup who has spent his whole life in a shelter with health issues , who recently lost a leg and an eye.. Leo will never fit inside a box made for all.. Leo is unique and needs a family that understands a dog with special needs. A understanding family that is willing to let his adoption day be his first day of life, as a puppy.. with new NORMAL hurdles of training and knowing what its like to live in a family home environment, something Leo should have experienced a long time ago... also with all Leo has been through .. he needs to keep his name or a name that rhymes ... a name change while facing new mountains may not be that easy on the kid!! ? Leo’s first family dumped him in the road !!
So my questions to a new family would be:
1. Are you willing an able to care for a special needs dog?
2. Can u treat Leo like today is his first day as life as a pup?
3. Do you have patience. ( can you handle a kid dropping a chili hotdog with the works and Leo eating it up and then having a nasty poop)
4. Can u handle a partial blind dog that doesn’t understand space and tries to sleep in a cat crate ?
5. Can you laugh when Leo needs a break on a leash with 3 legs or will he be drug across the way?
6. Can you train a puppy
And the most important question is
7. Does your energy match Leo’s are you happy, smiling and loving no matter the mountain.. Do you look at a cup as half empty or half full? Bc Leo is NOT a half empty kinda of guy!! ??

ABOUT OUR RESCUE DOGS:
All of our dogs are located in Connecticut, are spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccines, microchipped, have been given deworming medications, and have had CT State health checks, & go home with a leash, collar, & packet of medical paperwork.

BREED IDENTIFICATION:
Please understand that many rescue dogs are mixes of multiple breeds. Petfinder allows us to choose up to two breeds per dog. While the shelters and our rescue do our best in accurately identifying breeds, breed identification is not guaranteed. If there is a certain breed that you do not want, it is very important that you share this with our rescue when applying. When adopting a puppy, breed uncertainty plays a big part in the size/look of the dog as an adult. Please know that any puppy can be a wonderful dog, regardless of preconceived notions of certain breeds, but it is very important that the adopter has the dedication and patience to raise the puppy with boundaries, consistency, structure, & love. The more effort you give towards training & time you allow for exercise, your puppy will grow to be a HUGE source of UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, TOTAL LOYALTY, HAPPINESS, COMFORT & COMPANIONSHIP!

ABOUT OUR RESCUE:
We are a small rescue run by volunteers & focused on finding the right match for both our dogs & for you. If you are interested in adopting through our rescue, you first will need to complete an adoption application & be approved as a potential adopter before meeting any of our pups. No need to be intimidated by our application as it allows us to get to know you & your lifestyle. Of course, the more you can share the better! Please also note, while a fenced yard is fantastic, it is not required by our rescue, however, it may be required for a certain dog occasionally. Once adoption applicants are approved to become potential adopters, we offer private appointments where you can meet one or several dogs at the discretion of the rescue. We offer a unique & pleasant experience focused on finding the perfect match. It is extremely important to us that everyone is treated with respect & that NO ONE IS LEFT HANGING. WE WILL GET BACK TO YOU WITHIN 2 TO 3 DAYS of application submission. If there is a dog you are eager to meet, please TEXT US DIRECTLY at 203-241-2351 so that we can check the status of your application and move it forward immediately. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you find your new best friend.

*All adult dogs can be cat tested by request.

HOME/RENTER INSURANCE:
SOME PROVIDERS HAVE VERY STRICT POLICIES REGARDING WHICH TYPE OF DOG BREEDS ARE ALLOWED UNDER THEIR COVERAGE. STATE FARM WAS SUGGESTED TO US AS THEY DO NOT PUNISH, DROP, NOR REFUSE YOU DUE TO DOG BREED SHOULD YOU RUN INTO ISSUES WITH YOUR CURRENT PROVIDER.
