Meet Leila
We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.
Leila is a 6 years old, spayed female german shepherd/pitbull mix and 40 lbs. She is in a home in Washington state and can go on meet-n-greets for the surrounding areas. If you live outside a reasonable driving area, a video chat can be arranged.
Leila is very loving and cuddly, she is very attuned to her human's emotions and is quite comfortable snuggling on the sofa all day if that’s what you’re doing. She does have anxiety and is quite protective of her human - she is weary of men and needs slow introductions otherwise she will nip at them. When new people are entering her space, Leila can be defensive and will bark or lunge at them. She does best meeting new people outside her house on a short walk before entering the house together.
She has spent many hours in training and is very treat motivated. Leila knows the command of place, sit, stay, jump, down, in between (to walk in between your legs) shake, spin. She is crate, e collar, and muzzle trained. She has some separation anxiety so crating her is ideal until she feels safe and comfortable in the home (though it may take a while), then she can hang out loose and won’t be destructive.
Leila is a kangaroo in that she will jump a lot and can jump very high! She loves to run and does have a very high prey drive. Cats and small animals are an absolute no go for her. She will lunge a lot and pull with the intention of getting away from you to attack the dog or chase the cat. Outside of her known triggers, Leila has a strong recall.
She doesn't play much but will initiate tug with you and very much enjoys any stuffed toy that looks like a small animal - squirrels, birds, etc.
While on walks, Leila needs a strong and confident handler. That being said, dogs are still a huge trigger and she has a pretty low threshold when she sees dogs, which often means she’s unsuccessful in walking past them, even with some great distance. While on walks she uses a slip lead as she will often pull enough to get out of a harness. She is more successful with a short lead than a longer lead. She is also now e collar trained, it is a tool used to help remind her that walking behind her human is the safest space for her and that her human is protecting her, not the other way around.
Leila is dog selective - she has lived with a senior female dog and was so successful with that dog, and was able to maintain another female dog friend (though she is very much the dominant one in her relationships). She now lives with a female puppy who she has adopted as her baby and is very protective over. That said, she has bit and been bitten by other dogs so she is immediately on the defensive when being introduced to other dogs.
Leila is up to date on all her shots and has had a recent dental cleaning. She does have incontinence for which she takes medication daily, as well as trazadone before going to the vet and in known stressful situations.
She would be most successful in a single dog household, with a large lot of land she can explore without having to go on walks exposing her to other dogs. She would do great with a household that works from home that can spend lots of time playing with her and giving her love.
***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown. We rarely know a dog's exact age nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time. ***
