Meet Kristine

Meet Kristine! This velvet hippo is a senior gal, around 8ish years old. She’s got a story tell, so here’s what her southern foster says:

"Kristine came to me a mess several months ago to foster. She looked so sad. She had difficulty walking due to being so overweight and being so run down... she would wobble around and once while trying to turn too fast she fell down. Now she has pep in her step, her eyes are not sad anymore. She knows what proper care and love is.

She was not treated well in her life and had many worn marks and callouses on her legs which vastly improved. A sign we see often here in the South as dogs are forced to live outside, in most cases on a concrete slab.
She seems to really love her new comforts of home in foster care.
When she first got here anything she would attempt to do - walk to the door, the water bowl, she would look at me with questioning eyes asking for approval. It was very apparent she was unsure what was okay. Now she just does it with ease.
She absolutely loves to roll on her back in the grass. She loves human contact. She loves to go places, especially go for a ride in the car but will need a ramp as she cannot jump in and she is a heavy dog to pick up. My husband used a piece of plywood as a ramp. First time we had to push her up but in one week she lost enough weight and her second time she walked right up the ramp.
Kristine has a thyroid condition that went untreated for a long time which caused poor coat and weight gain. She is on twice a day Thyroxine-L given with food which is very cheap.

She tries to get on the couch but cannot jump up so we help her. She is crate and leash trained.

I have two senior small dogs here and Kristine gets along with them. One of my dogs is blind and grouchy and old and she growls at anything that gets too close to her and Kristine just looks at her and walks on by.

I do not think she would do well with cats because I have a cat that sleeps in my bedroom at night but is out during the day in the yard and when Kristine sees it she barks a lot. I have an acre fenced on 4 acres and the cat spends her time in the yard that is not fenced. So other than seeing the cat from afar Kristine has had no up close contact. She will be a faithful dog. Please reach out to the rescue and they would be happy to connect you with us!!”

Kristine has had a very long life of NOT being cared for the way she deserves. She is a very special senior lady who deserves nothing but love for the rest of her life.
If you can commit to giving Kristine the home she deserves, and understand that she will need a daily thyroid medication, please visit our website, www.safewithusanimalrescue.org!
