Meet Koda

Koda is a 9+ year old gentle giant who has been a fantastic foster since his arrival the end of January. Weighing in at 80 lbs of sweet chocolate, Koda came to us as a neglected retired breeder man who clearly was not cared for…After several baths, excellent evaluation and preventative care including neutering, micro chipping, and the removal of 10 teeth, Koda has learned to live indoors with our family, and proven the most gentle and quiet of guests. Due to his age, and most likely living conditions for first 9 years, Koda has slight arthritis in hind legs and lower spine and take Galliprant daily for maintenance. This seems to do the trick beautifully.

Our sweet man mastered potty training, leash training and steps in record time, and he’s the lowest maintenance dog we’ve ever had to date. We have only heard him bark twice-once to go out and the other while dreaming. We can only imagine what he must be thinking as he stares at us with his soulful eyes. We nicknamed him Eeyore for his sad eyes, but we are so proud of him for his calm temperament and want for only a soft bed and blankies. He loves his walks around the neighborhood and is incredible on a leash. While he’s initially hesitant of walking through doorways, he keeps his cool and doesn’t pull once out on the walk. He adjusts to the speed you walk him. Walk fast, walk slow….Koda doesn’t care. He even walks a few steps and looks back to see if you’re keeping up so he never pulls on the leash.

While he loves the company of other dogs, he does not rough house. We assume Koda is just content to parallel play and would be fine in a household with another dog or he would be fine being the sole resident dog. His extremely mellow personality would do best in a quieter household with older children or no children. We have two teen sons who know Koda prefers the calmer approach and enjoys being pet and walked. He’s not one for toys, but he does love the occasional bully stick or treat (just not a huge fan of peanut butter!). Koda is a lover of people food. During the first weeks and after surgery he enjoyed chicken and sweet potatoes and loves savory (not sweet) treats.

He can do steps, but he prefers to limit his space to the 8 x 10 rug and his bed at our house. Koda has run of the house and has never counter surfer or foraged for food. He has been left for 2-3 hours at a time during the day and every night sleeps alone downstairs with zero issues. would do best in a household with fewer steps to climb on a regular basis, but he takes everything is stride if on a lead. His new family will either need to lift his big self into the car or train him to use portable steps. He does jump out of the back of our SUV with coaxing, but being a big man, we’d like to ensure his forever home makes accommodations for him for transport.

Whoever adopts Sweet Koda Bear is getting a quiet man with so few needs but will create nothing but peace. The simple life is all he asks for…
