Meet Kirby

We are overjoyed to announce that Kirby's foster family has decided to officially adopt him! Kirby has had quite the journey over the last 5 months and has come so far under their carehe has let us know he is already where he is meant to be and is at his happiest- Congratulations Kirby!!

9/18/24 UPDATE: Kirby will have his heartworm re-test next week and we are hopeful for the all clear so he can begin his new heartworm free life!!

Location: Missouri but can be adopted anywhere in the United States

Breed: Kirby is either Newfoundland x some sort of shepherd mix or anyone's guess really

Age: He's whatever age you want him to be! He has a youthful stamina and would enjoy the exercise requirements of a dog around 3-5 years old

Origin Story: Kirby was found collapsed on the side of the road with an old bullet in his hip, unable to walk due to extreme starvation, his muscles had wasted. He was brought to a shelter who worked very hard to network with rescues to save his life. They found National Newfoundland Rescue and transferred him to our care.

Medical Status: Kirby currently requires a monthly Librela injection and joint supplements. His past left its mark on his body but he has improved astronomically and continues to improve. He loves to run and play with other dogs. He's currently on restricted exercise due to heartworm treatment but is definitely ready to run! Having completed heartworm treatment, we expect no long-term care is required beyond his Librela and joint supplements at this time.

Dog Friendliness: Absolutely! A playmate and/or companion please!

Kid Friendliness: Absolutely! Tested and approved for older kids, has not met very young kids yet.

Kirby's Dream: Kirby yearns to be your family dog, love, affection, walks, belly rubs, quiet evenings and some social time too. He's ready to make up for lost time being your loyal buddy.

Apply for Kirby today! Read below from the bottom to learn more about Kirby's rescue journey.

8/16/24 UPDATE: Kirby has completed his final heartworm treatment followed by a week long stay at the veterinary hospital. Kirby's personality has been shining through, he is affectionate and loving. He gives kisses and he loves to cuddle. Kirby has grown so strong and is walking very well!

7/25/24 UPDATE: Update on Kirby... He had his initial heartworm treatment stay June 24th at the vet hospital and did really well. He has been back at home since Monday, July 1st. He is getting Doxy twice a day and doing well at home. He has more energy and has to be reminded sometimes to take it easy, but overall he knows how to rest and just chill He will go back for the next heartworm treatment hospital stay on Aug 7th for another week. He'll be retested in September and we are praying Kirby will be heartworm free! Then he'll be ready to go to his forever home

5/26/24 UPDATE: Kirby had his initial consultation with the physical therapy specialist. She said that he's not able to start hydrotherapy yet due to the pain he was now showing from arthritis in his elbows and knees. She said that he needed to have a Librela shot right away and start mild at home physical therapy. She gave his foster mama several exercises to work with him on. In just a few days since this, he is already showing improvement. He is walking a little faster, standing with his legs more appropriately positioned, and it can be seen that he is overall just feeling better. More tail wags have been reported and he is really opening up to enjoying human contact

5/6/24 UPDATE: I'm happy to share that Kirby is back at his Foster's house from his medical stay at the vet as of this morning 5/6/24. He's expelled most of his worms and is actually gaining weight now. He's up 3 lbs! He's still incredibly under weight, and has a long road ahead of him, but we're hopeful for his long term recovery.

Kirby took his freedom ride from the shelter to his loving foster home on 4/20/2024!

Kirby was found on the side of the road with a bullet in him and was struggling to walk. He is heartworm positive and has a long road ahead of him.

Please consider donating to Kirby's care!
