Meet Kinsey

Kinsey is a spayed female Border Collie/Bearded Collie mixed breed who is a juvenile about 1.5 yrs old. She is house and crate trained, completely dog social, and fabulous on a leash. She respects the cats and gives them wide berth, but would love to be able to herd them if they run (although she stops immediately at a correction).
However if you are looking a dog to immediately bond with you, she is NOT for you. She was originally caught at 10 months of age, in a humane trap as humans were not capable of catching her. It was believed she had never had a home or any human experience. She was heartworm positive, undernourished, scared to death, but had the skills to survive. In 8 months time she has learned people can be trusted, and she seeks human contact for her needs, but it may take her an hour to decide it’s okay to come in the house.
She’s highly intelligent. She figured out a puzzle board within 2 days, that if she turned all the bones in the right direction, the drawers would open with treats. She’s delicate and cautious. She loves to herd and will ankle bite at a dog 3 times her size to steer him in the right direction. She would probably excel at a real herding job, but she far from responding to the word “come.”
Kinsey is now heartworm negative, spayed and current on all vaccines and preventatives, so physically she is in great shape. There is no aggression to her fear, she just drops and submits if cornered. She only recently has decided to get on the sofa at TV time, or get in human’s bed at nighttime, after being invited. (A practice we never allow any fosters, but have broken the rules to encourage her to bond.) Everyday as foster parents, we see her progress, but know it will be a slow journey to get her to be completely comfortable in a human environment. She welcomes any strange dog in the house and will engage them in play, but when strangers come to visit, and once they are settled, if she goes outside it may take 2 hours to get her back in the house. She is in a home with about an acre under fence that is wooded with lots of places to hide. If she doesn’t want to be found, you won’t find her.
It’s time for Kinsey to start bonding with her forever family. The hard work is done and the rest will take time and unlimited amounts of patience. Please only apply for her if you are prepared to commit to fulfill her needs and continue setting her up for success. The ideal home will be quiet with low activety and little alone time.
