About me: Kings of Leon is a dog who truly lives up to his powerful name, he’s bold, intelligent, and full of heart. As one of our longest residents, this handsome boy has been waiting far too long for his chance to shine. In the shelter, King can come across as “a lot of dog,” with plenty of pent-up energy from spending too much time in a kennel. But outside those walls, he’s an entirely different dog, focused, playful, and incredibly smart. He knows many commands, learns quickly, and once he bonds with his person, he thrives with off-leash freedom in a safe space like a farm. King shows respect toward larger barn animals, though his reaction to chickens and barn cats is still unknown.

This boy is happiest when he has an outlet for his energy and a human/canine companion who can keep up with his playful spirit. He does wonderfully with other dogs that match his rough-and-tumble play style and would do great with a canine friend who enjoys games as much as he does. King is extremely strong and knows it, so he’ll need an adopter ready to handle his size and strength with confidence. Because of his separation anxiety, he isn’t the best fit for traditional crates, he can break out of wire and travel-style kennels, but a heavy-duty metal crate works well for him, and one of our team members is even offering to sell theirs to King’s future family to help set him up for success.

Despite being overlooked time and time again, Kings of Leon is a truly amazing dog with so much to offer. He just needs someone to see past the shelter chaos and recognize the loyal, loving, and brilliant companion he really is. With the right person, King will not only live up to his name, he’ll rule your heart.

The Animal Rescue Project (www.animalrescueproject.org) is committed to the best possible veterinary care for the pets it rescues and it is looking for adopters who will be similarly committed.

Adoptions are NOT first come, first served! We seek to choose the best fit for the approved adopter and pet.

Please understand that these animals are still new to us and their needs and requirements can change at any time as we learn more about them. We will try our best to get them updated online as soon as possible.

All dogs and puppies are given a general check-up when they enter our program. They receive medication to remove any intestinal parasites (worms), fleas, and ticks they may have. Dogs greater than six months of age are checked for heartworm. If heartworm positive, the Animal Rescue Project treats the disease. Dogs and pups receive all age-appropriate vaccinations for distemper, and dogs greater than four months of age are also vaccinated for rabies, in compliance with State of Michigan laws. All dogs are also microchipped.

Most dogs and older puppies are spayed or neutered before adoption. In the case of puppies not old enough to be safely sterilized, a $50 deposit is required at the time of adoption and is refunded to the adopter with proof of sterilization.

The Animal Rescue Project requires every adopter to establish an active relationship with a veterinarian no later than 10 days after adoption. Adopters will receive a plan for routine veterinary care at the time of adoption and are expected to work with their vet to complete the plan.
