Meet Josie

Requirements: A 6' or taller privacy fence, puppy mill experience, no children, someone w/o close neighbors/outside of city limits due to excessive barking when outside.

Josie is a playful girl who had a rough start in life. She came into rescue as a one-year-old with almost no human interaction, so she will need a home that understands that she may never become a "normal" family dog. Josie has made some social gains. She has learned to go potty outside and will tell you when she wants to go out, but you need to be paying attention or she'll have an accident She loves other dogs and is constantly play bowing at her foster siblings in attempts to get them to play with her. She is good with a cat that tolerates dogs. She also loves toys and tries to take as many toys as she can outside to play with in the yard when the weather is nice. She doesn't mind the rain or snow and tolerates mild wind. If the sun is out, she prefers to be lying in the hottest spot.

Josie will take treats out of human hands every time they are offered and is quick to learn where the treats are and what she needs to do to get them. She does not let you pet her or hold her willingly. Even with treats and praise Josie shakes and is very uncomfortable while being held. She has learned "stay" which has made it easier to pick her up when needed. Josie is making progress walking on a leash. She follows the lead of the other dogs in her foster home, so would do best in a home with another dog to teach her the household routines. In the car, she travels well in a kennel and is quiet, but needs to be taken out of the kennel in a secure location. She is and probably always will be a major flight risk, meaning if she sees a way to escape, she will, and you will not catch her.

Josie is quiet inside and barks very little, She does bark outside, so her ideal home would be someone without close neighbors or someone who lives outside of city limits. She likes to be with people, she is not afraid of strangers and will sit next to you on a couch or on the floor. She probably won't ever be a cuddly lap dog, but she will always be in the same room with you, she wants to know where her humans are - always. She is really smart and has learned the daily routine in her foster home very quickly. We are hopeful that more progress can be made since she is still young, but realistically, she will never be a social, cuddly pup. Her progress has been slow, but there has been progress and she is a very sweet-natured dog. She just needs a lot of time and patience. 6/16/22 6:43 PM
