Jack would like a large fenced open space to investigate and patrol and sniff several times per day. He will kill any mice in the vicinity and eat them, putting any area cats out of business (he will also dispatch any cats). He will eat anything food-like left within reach! Jack needs an attentive person or people and teens would also be ok. He would love to have someone around the house the majority of the time but has absolutely no problems with being left behind for the day, either. No cats, rabbits, chickens, Guinea pigs, or birds in the home—he has a strong small animal prey drive. He can stay in his kennel for a business day with no issues and knows the “kennel up” command. Another large dog that is well behaved and well mannered would be a plus but he enjoys the antics of the little Jack Russell’s in the foster home also. He’s not a dog park kinda guy or a busy brewery hangout dude…all of those chaotic introductions and unpredictable people freak him out. Jack needs someone who will spend quality time with him learning things like learning to lay down, watching tv, walking in the woods, running...etc. He is potty, leash, and kennel trained and hasn’t had any accidents in the house. The first 5 minutes on the leash can be a bit of a tornado ride but he settles in nicely. Like most GSPs he is a Velcro pet. He wants to be with you and participate in puttering about the house or yard.
He doesn’t like to be surprised by strangers (doorbell, knock, walking in…) and can react with some big barking and will need redirection when that Fed Ex guy shows up. Training on going to his crate when those things happen and giving high value rewards would be beneficial and it is working in his foster home. Jack seems to be intelligent and likes learning new things. He also enjoys watching the neighbors and everything going on outside the window. Give him toys to shred, pull on/pull with him, and toys to carry around—he likes to be busy. He LOVES LOVES his treadmill time! He will let you know when he wants to take himself for a walk! He’ll do a slow 1-3 miles in the morning and then naps the day away. He will also gladly flop on the couch and watch a movie as long as you’re there. He has started learning to sniff game birds and work the tall grass but would need focused attention on recall and other hunting commands to become a sporting buddy.
