THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ADOPTION ARE IN THE CONTENT OF THE WEBSITE. A FENCED YARD, PREVIOUS SHELTIE EXPERIENCE AND A FABULOUS HOME VISIT AND REFERENCE FROM YOUR VETERINARIAN.

Pupdate from Lou, Island's foster dad....."Island is nervous about new surroundings and will pace around a dining room table, her little legs moving like pistons, going round and round for an hour or more. This WILL settle down, though it might take a week. She prefers to be outside, where there is the most room to run, and will sprint away from an approaching human. If you see her sprinting away from you, about-face and walk slowly back the way you'd come. She will whirl around and follow about fifteen feet behind you. She is skittish about taking food from your hand, but will eat it if you drop it and step back. You can take the time she needs to train her to take treats from your hand. She is curious, inventive and bold. Within three days in her foster home she was running up and down the fence barking at walkers going by. She is especially offended by bicyclists and is not shy about sharing her feelings directly with them. At night, in her foster home, she sleeps on the bed, curled up like a fox with her nose beneath her tail and, while not a snuggler, doesn't mind long, slow strokes down the length of her back or gentle circles against the ones around her eyes. She is fiercely loyal and protective, despite her diminutive size and once she has found her forever home she will gradually become socially adept."
We all have baggage that we carry around and it takes time to shed it and become who we were meant to be. So sayeth our Director!

Island is a tiny, quirky and light boned Sheltie from a commercial breeder in Kansas. The lack of early socialization in a shy breed like Shelties can be a challenge to overcome but with lots of love and hands-on time on your lap, you can make magic. A well-socialized companion dog on the small-ish size can make all the difference for Island. She is used to being one of a gaggle of dogs and she understands pack dynamics. It's humans she is not sure about.

Island is a 14 month old, 13# sable merle Sheltie. She is spayed, UTD on vaccines, microchipped and has great bloodwork. She is beginning to understand that her foster mom likes it when she potties outside. We will not consider any foster or adopter without Sheltie experience.
