Meet Iris

FOSTERED IN: Elgin, IL 60124
ESTIMATED DOB: 2013
WEIGHT: 55lbs
KIDS: Likely
DOGS: Yes
CATS: Unknown

HISTORY:
Iris came to us from an animal control facility in Louisiana. She was heartworm positive when she arrived and has successfully completed her treatment. Iris has a double-merle coat which has caused her to be mostly (but not completely) deaf. Iris ended up at animal control because her owner thought their only other option was to euthanize her: Iris lived outside and kept going to the neighbor’s house and going inside their doggie door and the neighbors were complaining.

ABOUT:
Iris is a lovely low energy lady who is ready to make an excellent family companion. Iris is not needy, but she loves to follow her foster family around the house when they are home. She is rarely hard to find as she can generally be found sitting on your feet or right next to your legs as she likes to be close, but prefers to lay on the floor. Iris is friendly with everyone she has met. She would definitely take candy from strangers. Iris is not being fostered with any children, but we believe she would do very well with any children who are old enough to realize she can startle easily because of her very poor hearing.

Iris loves the other dogs in her foster home, but does not enjoy hands-on rough play and will be more wary/cautious around dogs who want to get physical. She likes to do a lot of “let’s lay really close together” and “let’s look at eachother adoringly” type of activities with the other dogs. Iris has some arthritis in her hind end, so she would likely be the last chosen if we were selecting PE teams. She will occasionally try to run around with the younger resident dog and she gives it her all...but she can’t really keep up. Iris is very calm, but curious when she sees/meets dogs outside the home. Iris is not crated in her foster home, but she does have a special “foster suite” that she goes in when no one is home. She generally barks for a few minutes and then settles in to wait for their return. Iris loves going for car rides, but she struggles to get in and out on her own (see previous comment about PE teams). Iris is being fostered in a home with a fenced yard and she loves to go out and have time to meander around and smell all the smells, so we think she might appreciate that in her forever home. Iris would do best in a home with limited stairs. Iris chooses to stay downstairs at her foster home when everyone else goes upstairs to bed. We aren’t sure if it is due to her arthritis or because she was never used to going up and down stairs, but it is probably some of both.

If you’re interested in having a low-key, calm, fur covered indoor shadow, Iris might be the girl for you!
