Meet Honey

Honey is a 1.5-year-old, 57-pound American pit bull terrier mix. She would make a loyal companion to an experienced owner and a loving family, preferably with a backyard. She will give you enormous pride seeing her growth and love you with every fiber of her being.

On a fateful September day in 2020, Honey was spotted wandering the street, very pregnant and skinny to the bone. She was rescued by a Louie’s Legacy volunteer on that day and subsequently transported to an experienced foster who was willing to take her in despite short notice. Three days later, Honey gave birth to three lovely pups and became the best Pittie mama ever. She was willing to neglect her own needs until her pups were nursed and happy.

Three months later, with much love and patience of her foster, Honey put on some much-needed healthy weight and grew the most beautiful, velvety, dark chocolate colored fur. After her pups have all gone on to loving forever families, she was introduced to a new foster family in Manhattan and began a new chapter of her life.

Since then, she has not ceased amazing her foster every day with her ability to learn and to love. At first, she was very scared of the busy city streets and rambling cars. She didn’t want to go outside and couldn’t make 50 feet from the apartment complex without turning back. Within a week, she was able to comfortably stroll the street block after block. She walks nicely on the leash when she is at ease, always staying close to her human, and understands the lightest tuck of the leash to change directions or make a stop. She can still get nervous sometimes, and that’s when she would pull the leash in a slow but persistent fashion, determined to turn back and go home. That said, she doesn’t jerk or have sudden movement. So when she pulls the leash, the owner would have ample time to prepare and try to calm her down and keep walking. She is friendly with people, women and men and children, greeting them with a gentle nose touch. She is selectively playful with dogs and non-responsive to others. She can play rough and her human needs to watch her body language to pull her back a little when needed.

On the trails, she is just a beautiful dog and makes the best hiking partner. She walks with confidence and can run alongside her human tirelessly for miles. She stays close to her pack with or without a leash.

She is semi house trained, meaning that she knows to do her business outside and can hold for a long time (her schedule is 7 am, 4 pm, and 11 pm), with the exception that sometimes she cannot find a quiet spot on the city streets where she feels safe. She would then hold and hold until it passes her limit, and she ends up having an accident at home. For this reason, we feel that it will be best if she can have a backyard in her forever home. That said, the accidents have become few and far between as she grows more and more comfortable in the city.

At home, she is the biggest mush and very affectionate. Her favorite activities are cuddling with her foster dad on the couch and doing training to earn treats. She knows “sit”, “down”, “no”, and “come here”. She doesn’t chew on shoes or cables and is well-mannered around the dining table. She leaves the house cat alone. She is a guard dog and will bark when she picks up sounds outside of the home, although she is making great progress on toning it down for apartment living.
