Meet Honey
I’m a sweet, active 5 year old girl who likes to go for long walks, because I love exercise. Even so, when we had horrible weather, I was willing to stay inside and snuggle with my foster mom. In my first home, lots of kids at once made me very nervous, so I need a home where adults will be consistent so I will remember my good manners.
Some people say I bark a lot, but I bark only for a good reason. OK, there might be a couple of good reasons, though. One is somebody at the door. But every good dog does that, right? If it’s you, my tone of voice says, “Welcome back, I love you, I’m so excited to see you!” I quit barking when you greet me. If it’s the mailman, it’s “You’d better not be delivering any bills, go away!” And it always works, so I’m quiet again. I bark when I want to come in, because I want to be with you. When foster mom is home, I bark at thunder so she’ll come and get me. I drape myself over her lap, and then I take a nap.
My mom is a standard poodle and my dad is a golden retriever. I don’t shed nearly as much as a golden, but I do shed a little, and I’ll need grooming to keep me from getting matted. Foster mom says I’ve gotten a lot better about keeping my feet and my nose off the counter, but maybe that’s because she doesn’t keep any food there when I’m loose in the kitchen.
I love to retrieve tennis balls, but you’d better have two, because if you have one, I might decide you’d really be better off chasing me and getting more exercise. But if you show me a second ball, I’ll put the first one down to go get the second one. . I am also a really good snuggler and will stay nice and close to you on the couch. I am a good houseguest, I am housebroken and crate trained, but I don’t need to be crated, because I am not destructive at all. But I love having a kong with some of my breakfast in it to work on.
I used to like to play rough with my people and I can still get pretty mouthy when excited if your hands are too active. I hope you are getting the picture that I will need a patient, kind owner who will enjoy taking me to positive reinforcement obedience classes, because I love learning. I have some bad associations with people grabbing at my collar which made me nippy, but since I have been working on positive associations with being handled, I expect good things to happen when my collar is grabbed. I’ll even let you take good stuff out of my mouth if you promise me a cookie. I’ll do almost anything for a cookie!
I have two golden foster sisters, and we coexist peacefully, although occasionally I want to keep foster mom to myself and give them a tiny growl. I do it less, because for some reason, foster mom moves away instead of the other two dogs!
I have had seizures in the past, but I’m taking medicine called Gabapentin, and I haven’t had a single seizure since being on this and away from stress. I hope they are a thing of the past.
As you can see, I have a lot of great qualities and will turn into a wonderful companion whether you want to snuggle, exercise, or train. I am ready for you to welcome me into your home so we can play all day long!
