2/27/19 - Harvey, a/k/a Mr Personality, is a sweet and cuddly fellow, is about 9 weeks old, and while he has some vision impairment, once he is used to an area, he does fine. We do not know if the condition will worsen as he ages, but he seems to have more trouble when out in the sunlight, versus being indoors where there is no 'bright' sunlight. Even if he does go totally blind, blind dogs live a long and happy life, just like any other dog. They use their other 4 senses and get around just fine, when given the appropriate tools. For example, tie a scented pouch to the door to go outside, so he can find it more easily. This guy will give you a lifetime of love and asks no more than love in return.

The breed mix - chihuahua/Feist is our best guess, based on what we were told by the rescue that took in Mom.

Feists are typically small to medium-sized dogs, 10 to 18 in (45 cm) tall, and weigh 15 to 30 lb, short-coated dogs with long legs. However, being mixed with Chihuahua, we don't feel they will get as big as a pure Feist would. They likely will have some innate prey drive for small critters though, as Feists are bred for hunting small prey, such as squirrels, rabbits, rodents, etc. This means they should probably be confined by fence or leash, as they might quickly take off after something, leaving them subject to being hurt.

*/*/* The puppies will receive age-appropriate vaccines prior to adoption, and will be neutered the first week in March. Adopters will be required to provide additional puppy boosters and a rabies vaccine, when they are old enough.

We are happy to consider applicants from out of state. However, if the applicant is approved, they must be willing to come to our location in Troy, VA, for a meet and greet. If all parties agree that the pup and family are a good fit, they would take the pup home at that time.

GDU does ask a minimum adoption fee of 300.00. This does not even come close to covering all expenses created by animals while in rescue. We are funded solely by the angels and volunteers willing to donate time and finances. This minimum fee includes DAPP, rabies if age appropriate,, heartworm test and preventative, if age appropriate, and flea and tick treatment, as well as neutering or spaying if the animal is medically sound to undergo surgery. In an attempt to avoid tummy upset from a sudden change of food, the foster family may include a small, transitional bag of the food the dog/puppy has been eating. And if the dog/puppy has grown attached to a special item (like a toy or blanket), they may send that along, as well.
