Meet Harvey

Background: Harvey holds a special place in all of our hearts and we are committed to finding him his perfect forever home. You see, Harvey is currently our longest resident having been back with us since October 2, 2020. He lived for 3.5 years with the same family after being adopted from us as a puppy at about 14 weeks of age.

Having come to know Harvey again over the last many months we have determined that a FEMALE ONLY household is what he requires. If you have a female child, he would do well with a dog savvy middle school aged one or high school aged female, but we wouldn't recommend him for a home with younger children. We don't typically breed label dogs, because in rescue they don't always act like the typical breed does, but we know Harvey is a cattle dog mix because his momma came with him back in 2017 and his physical traits confirm this. Here is a little information about the personality of a cattle dog mix: An extremely alert and intelligent dog, he is loyal to owners and wary of strangers. He is very energetic and not suited for apartment living. He thrives when he has a job to do.

Harvey is looking for an active owner who will physically and mentally stimulate him. Potential jobs for him could be herding livestock, daily walks or runs, chasing balls or frisbees, scent detection, trick training, or doing fun dog sports like agility, flyball, or fast cat. He has good recall and knows basic commands. He loves going to doggie daycare and burning off his energy or going on dog pack walks to local places like Slaughter Pen Farm (or others that welcome dogs). Harvey has amazing potty manners and will just need to get acclimated to his new home and your routine. He crates well and we would recommend that you feed him in his crate, crate him when you eat, at night, and when you aren't home. This will help him understand the boundaries in your house. He would do best to be crated if you have company over to eliminate his protective nature from coming out in a negative way.

With his breed mix, his prey drive is still very much a thing. In his new home he would need to NOT be around small dogs or cats and if he is not the only dog, he would need to be paired with a submissive, easy going dog. He can tend to get jealous overtime if he doesn't get the right amount of attention and physical/mental outlets.

Harvey has loved going to doggie daycare and this is what THE RUFF HOUSE FXBG says about him:

Charming, confident, playful, and sooo cute! Harvey is an amazing daycare dog. He channels his inner working dog and absolutely loves burning off his energy by chasing his friends around the yard. His play style is perfect and fits with every dog he makes friends with. He is an attention seeker and loves nudging staff to get all the head rubs and ear scratches throughout the day. Harvey is going to make a family extremely happy that they adopted him.

Harvey is 4 years old and weighs 50lbs. He could lose a few more pounds to ensure he keeps healthy joints into his senior years. We can give you information on his current food and amounts so you can keep his figure looking its best. We can also talk to you about joint supplements such as NUPRO or ENDURE. On his cheat days, when he’s not watching his weight he loves outings to Dairy Queen for ice cream, nuggets from McDonald’s, or a donut from Krispy Kreme. Overall, he just loves being with his person wherever they go.
