Meet Gus
Gus is 1.5 years old and 28lbs.
From his foster:
Gus is a really special, goofy boy. He is housebroken (will stand by our glass door and wait for us to let him outside), crate trained (sleeps through the night with no accidents) and knows basic obedience really well. He knows sit, go to your place, paw, down, stay, leave it and drop it. We’ve been using “ok” as our release word, and he gets so excited for “go to your place”…“stay” then… “ok” and will run up to you all happy when released from his stay. He is very treat motivated. He is the biggest cuddle bug at night and a huge Velcro dog. He always wants to know what you’re up to. He is also the most agile dog I’ve ever seen, and I think he’d be great at agility training one day.
Since Gus was found on the streets, living in a home is new for him. He is still working on some puppy behaviors such as counter surfing, jumping, puppy biting and playing gently. Although he is getting MUCH better, I would recommend a household without young children. We also don’t quite trust him to be alone in the kitchen or anywhere near socks or shoes if we aren’t there! He’s come to know the words “drop it” and “leave it” really well. He does well in his crate when we’re gone.
He is still working on leash walking, and he is reactive to dogs and strangers if they are too close. We’ve learned to change direction and keep him in a heel when triggers are around. With time, patience, and proper training, I think he will be able to get through this, but I do think he would do best in a rural or suburban setting where he may not encounter a lot of unknown dogs or people he isn’t used to.
Gus would do best in a household with a yard (he absolutely loves to run around, chase after tennis balls and play tug!). Gus has a history of abuse and so he is extremely fearful of strangers. I think he needs a household with the ability to let him hang out in the yard or in a crate/separate room when guests are over. I think it will take time and training to get him through this. He also LOVES dogs and I think would also benefit from a household with another dog who could show him the ropes and teach him that people aren’t scary.
Gus deserves a home with the time to devote to his training and a yard for his zoomies. He has so much love to give and has really stolen our hearts.
