Meet Gunner- ADOPTED

Gunner is about 23 months old (as of 1/11/2021), a Beagle and Wiemaraner Mix from the country of Taiwan. He weighs 44 pounds and is fully-grown. Gunner has been living with our foster family in North Wilmington in Delaware since 8/21/2020.

Gunner’s rescued story:

In last October, while a dog rescuer driving on a busy highway in northern Taiwan, she glimpsed a very skinny black dog strayed on the traffic island. The rescuer pulled over and approached the dog with a can of dog food and some dry food. Surprisingly, the dog walked toward her soon he saw her; he ate the entire can food quickly and more dry food.

As the rescuer looked closely, she immediately realized how severely emaciated this black dog was. He was not only extremely thin, but his body and head covered with many new and old wounds, and some of these wounds were still bleeding. The dog was very friendly, so she successfully walked him to her car. We named the dog Gunner as he fights for his life like a brave warrior.

Gunner was brought to the vet hospital for a checkup. He was about 8-9 months old and only weighed 24 lbs., more than 10 pounds under the ideal weight; he was suffering from severe malnutrition. Much sadly, the vet confirmed that the wounds on his body were from the knife slash, dog bites and objects cut.

The rescuer concerned if Gunner was a lost dog due to his gentle and mellow disposition; however, she was told about his tragic life by one of her friends living in where Gunner was found.

Gunner originally was one of a litter born by a neglected family mother dog, the owner did not want to spend money spaying the dog and let the dog continue getting pregnant. None of the mother dog and her puppies were allowed to live inside the house, a cardboard box next to the owner’s house was their shelter.

At the age of 3-4 months old, Gunner already lost all his siblings from being killed by the cars or died from being sickness; he was the only puppy luckily survived. But, one day Gunner was thrown out into the streets by the owner to let him fend for himself. Whenever Gunner approached the house, the owner brutely beat him away with a thick stick or a broomstick. Gunner confused why he was not allowed to go near his mom nor the house.

The neighbors were not nice to Gunner either; they would hit him or scare him away because they think that Gunner would refuse to leave after being fed. Although Gunner was treated cruelly by his owner and the residents, he never walked far. He strayed close to his mom, the house, and the owner family because it was the place he grew up and they were the only people he knew.

Gunner’s completed medical information:

Gunner has received a thorough medical exam; fortunately, he was rescued in time because he was found to have Haemobartonella and Giardia infections. After three months of treatments, his both infections were cured, and he has been healthy since then.
Gunner is negative on the following disease and infections: Distemper, SNAP 4Dx (Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma Phagocytophilum), CBC, Biochemistry blood work, and PCR tests for diseases and infections transmitted by fleas or ticks. He has also received an x-ray on his hips and joints; he does not have hip dysplasia. He got his teeth cleaned in August 2020.

Gunner is neutered, de-wormed, up to date on all vaccinations including rabies shot. He is heartworm negative and on preventative treatment and is micro chipped. All Gunner's medical documents including his X-ray films on the hips will be given to his adopter when he is adopted.

Gunner’s temperaments and personality:

Although Gunner has a rough start, he never gave up hope and trust on human. He is one of the most mellow and gentlest dogs we have ever met; he does not have a mean bone in his body. Gunner has adapted to any new environment very easily, and there is no transition for Gunner. He is kind and sweet to every creature he met; he just very cherishes any roof provided.

Gunner is a naturally loving and affectionate dog that loves people unconditionally even though he was mistreated by the people whom he loved. He is super friendly and passionate to strangers and wants to cuddle when he just met the person.

Although Gunner is almost two years old, sometimes he still acts like a puppy; he loves to communicate or get attention by pawing at people. Gunner loves to sleep; especially, he loves to snuggle with his foster mom on the bed, but like a little child, Gunner is sleepy in the morning and it is hard to wake him up. Every morning when the foster mom tries to get Gunner out of bed, he would slip foster mom the paw, “I wanna sleep!” While the foster mom getting ready in the bathroom, Gunner usually still sleeping.

Before coming to the USA, Gunner was fostered by a family for nine months, living with two 12 and 13-year-old children, many rescued dogs and three cats; he got along very well with all of them. Everyone that meets Gunner loves him right away for his well-behavior and easy-going personality. He is also submissive and listens.

Gunner loves to play and run with other dogs, and he is often the center of the group while wrestling. He seems to enjoy such attention from his dog friends, and he has never got upset even though sometimes some of them went too rough.

Gunner likes to chew dental bones, deer antlers and twigs, but does not seem interested in playing with the ball. He LOVES food, but he is not food or toy aggressive or possessive toward both people and dogs. Every time while other dogs are still eating their meals, Gunner already wolfed down his food. Although he wants other dog’s food, he would politely stand behind the dog and wait patiently to see if he could luckily pick up some kibbles falling from the bowel.

Gunner does not have separation anxiety; he is fine to stay at home with other dogs. He is not scared of thunderstorms, fireworks, or other noises, but he is alert; he would bark if there is a dog barking or some noises outside. He also howls at the answering machine, but he would stop howling when he was called.

Gunner is very playful but not hyper, he will be a wonderful companion for a moderately-highly active family that likes outdoors activities with children older than 5 years old.

Gunner needs some outdoors exercise everyday such as long-distance walks, hiking, playing, or running in the yard. He will not do well in the apartments, condos, or with the retirees’ life paces; he needs a fully enclosed fenced yard, not invisible yard. People who sharing living space with roommates are not considered by us either.

Gunner is house broken, walks nicely on leash, and loves car rides; he is calm and well-behaved in the car.

We hope Gunner’s new parents could include him into your outings, short trips, or vacations besides daily walks in the neighborhood, or playing in the back yard. We wish Gunner could have chance to experience different parts of his life that he had missed before.
