Gunner is a purebred Chocolate Lab who is a year and 8 months old. He weighs about 80 lbs., is neutered, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Gunner is house-trained and crate-trained.
He's invisible fence trained and previously lived in a 1-cat household prior to coming into rescue. He is very interested in chasing squirrels and critters, and since there's no cat in his foster home it will depend on both Gunner and the cat as to whether they would like to co-reside.
Gunner rings a bell when he wants to go out. When he's happy or excited he joyfully parades around with a toy in his mouth. Balls and sticks are his favorite things. Gunner will put his head in your lap when he wants something. He loves belly rubs, and rump scratches.
Gunner can be overly enthusiastic with his play style and can get too rough for some dogs (or for those dog owners who don't let dogs work it out themselves). He gets along great with his foster's female dog. He likes to play.
Gunner is a young, active dog with stunning looks and beautiful eyes.
Gunner is a healthy young dog who need an experienced dog owner who understands that dogs in rescue come with baggage. The right adopter is willing to learn the techniques that Gunner's foster has learned from a behaviorist. As a young dog, Gunner wasn't taught that he's not the boss, so if you're a pushover, Gunner's going to take the reins.
Gunner's foster dad has been working with a behaviorist and has learned how to provide the leadership that this young, sweet, affectionate dog requires. They have made tremendous progress together and his foster is looking forward to sharing these tips and tactics with Gunner's adopter so you, too, can enjoy the companionship of this sweet, wonderful dog.
The ideal adopter must be an active person who ensures that Gunner gets the exercise he needs. He’d do well with someone who would like a running companion. After all, a tired dog is a good dog.
He has never bitten anyone, but he will curl a lip and sometimes let out a quiet growl to express displeasure or discomfort. Gunner is so young, and so trainable! It simply takes someone interested in dog behavior, someone who likes to learn and will follow some pretty simple instructions and you'll have a gorgeous, healthy, happy, affectionate purebred chocolate Lab.
"Resource guarding" his human is what landed him in rescue and what his adopter must learn to manage. It's not rocket science.
With patience, love, training and leadership, he has made INCREDIBLE progress. His foster dad has been putting in the work and has been showing him kind - but firm - leadership, proving that this behavior is completely manageable.
Gunner is waiting for the right person who understands that he's a really good dog who needs an experienced adopter with commitment and knowledge of managing this type of behavior. For this reason, Gunner will go to a home without kids.
An adopter will need to commit to meeting with the behaviorist that we have been working with, and getting him into a Best Buddies-type class shortly after adoption. This will ensure that the adopter is as committed to Gunner's success as we are looking for in a successful applicant.
