Meet Gunner- On Medical Hold
*8/16/19- He is 4 years old today. We have had him in rescue for 1 year. We never thought we would still have this sweetheart this long.
GUNNER, 3 years old (dob 8/16/18), 61 lbs., is a gorgeous dark brindle male who came to us heartworm positive and with a broken hip. He is a total sweetheart, full of love and happy energetic Boxer, and wants all of your attention. He is a highly active dog and may look calm in his pictures but is a STRONG energetic Boxer! He would rather be doing something and wanders around getting a dog to play or find something to play with. He is not one to just lay on the couch but loves his humans. He needs action and has lot of energy and a strong boy! He likes to chew, so need safe things for him to chew and plenty of exercise. He is great with other dogs and loves to play but best with large non dominant female as can be dominant.
He is good with cats in his Foster Home. He lets them lay next to him and rub against him. He will chase them if they are running and think he just wants to play. No guarantees on new cats.
More than anything he wants to be with people and he loves everyone. He especially excited when he thinks you want to play with him. Kids need to be older kids ages 10+ experienced with large dogs as he doesn't know his size and strength and gets so excited and will jump up on kids and adults. He settles in and needs routines and best with Boxer experience. He is just a big love bug who wants an active family that has the time and is going to do things with him.
He LOVES being an indoor dog but he LOVES outside to play but not left out there. He loves that his Foster Mom works from home. He doesn't like being alone and needs a large friendly female dog to be his buddy and playmate. He does have separation anxiety and needs to be crated when you are not home as he will get into things and be destructive. He is crate trained and house trained. He needs at least a 6 foot privacy fence as will climb out of chain link. He loves his yard and wouldn't be happy on a leash going outside. His favorite thing is to go on walks or just be outside playing with his family. He is strong on a leash and if not on a leash would run off at anything he sees.
He needs to keep his weight where it is and not put more stress on his hips, so needs to be active and get exercise. He doesn't need to get overweight. He has been going to PetsMart for training and he is so smart. He loves walking over to and around in Home Depot. Gunner is a Boxer drooler/slobberer so have the towel ready. HA!
MEDICAL: He came to us heartworm positive and xrays showed his hip was broken and needed surgery, Most likely was hit by a car. First he had heartworm treatment. Gunner lost a lot of weight and muscle tone during those 2 months of being calm. After he was cleared by Vet, his Foster Dad started taking him on walks to build his muscles and he gained weight. He had to wait 30-45 days after hw treatment to be cleared to go to the Orthopedic Vet. In January, he had xrays/consult at the Ortho Vet. We are happy to announce that he doesn't need hip surgery at this time. He gets around so well that you wouldn't know there is a problem. Ortho recommended no surgery as could make it worse. The old injury healed and he has adjusted to it. Ortho reported he may not need surgery unless something happens in the future. We are praying he never needs it. He is free to run, play and take walks and have a happy doggy life! He needs family who will keep the exercise up to keep the muscles up in that leg. He loves to go for walks and loves to run laps around a big yard. He also doesn't need to get overweight and put more stress on his hip.
GUNNER feels so much better now. He has more energy, curious, muscles, and is a strong healthy boy! Before hw treatment we would have reported he was laid back, but no longer the same boy. We didn't know how sick he was from the heartworms. His Foster Dad is taking him on walks and he sure has the leg muscles and looking so good! He needs the walks and exercise. He needs active family to keep him moving. By the way, he tends to be magnetized to human males, but loves his Foster Mom and other females too.
Adoption fee is $250. He is neutered, shots, rabies, microchipped, fecal/heartworm negative and on heartworm prevention. 6 ft+ Privacy fenced in yard required. Go to How to Adopt for our Requirements and online Adoption Application at www.BoxerRescueOfTexarkana.com.
