Meet Grasshopper (Blind)

GRASSHOPPER IS BLIND. HE IS LIVING IN A FOSTER HOME. Please submit an online adoption application if you would like to meet him. Thank you!

Date of birth: 10/2015

3/6/2019: Grasshopper is a darling 3 year old Terrier mix. He weighs 55 lbs. Grasshopper is very loving and affectionate. He loves to snuggle on the couch. He is very smart and he manages his blindness very well. He is confident about getting around in the house and yard. He is house trained. He rides nicely in the car. He's quiet and he's not destructive, and at night he goes right into his kennel when you tell him it's time to go to bed.   He'd do best in a home with someone who is home quite a lot. He loves being with people.

Grasshopper gets along well with other dogs and lives with two dogs in his foster home. If you have a dog you could bring your dog to meet Grasshopper.
He'd be good living in home with older kids, but probably not real young kids who wouldn't know not to startle him.

Grasshopper is extremely food and treat motivated. He hears and smells everything!

Grasshopper was originally a stray and picked up by KCK Animal Services. We took him to an ophthalmologist and he’s been diagnosed with bilateral detached retinas and wandering nystagmus. He’s likely been blind from birth and it’s irreversible.  At this time, he doesn’t need any medications and he’s not in pain. He’ll need regular checkups with an ophthalmologist. As time goes on it's possible that he could develop glaucoma or secondary side effects such as inflammation that could require meds, so it's important that he get regular check ups.

Grasshopper has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. We can’t imagine how he survived as a blind stray, but he’s a wonderful dog who deserves a wonderful home.

MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS...

> WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO SUBMIT AN ONLINE ADOPTION APPLICATION AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. By submitting an online application, we can process your application more quickly and can schedule an appointment for you to come in so that our small staff can serve you best. It also allows us to make arrangements if you’d like to meet a pet in foster care. Please visit our web site at HSGKC.ORG for an adoption application and more information about our adoption process, fees and all that's included.  An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements.

> If you decide you'd like to adopt one of the pets you meet, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the pet home with you that day. We’ll instead schedule a pick up date and time that’s convenient for you.

> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!

> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.

Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!
