Gia Retriever Mix New York, NY

Gia is an nearly 8 month old mutt that was rescued in Puerto Rico. She was found with her two brothers and a sister weeks after they were born in the woods. (One of the litter mates had already died.) The brothers were adopted in Puerto Rico and she and her sister came to the states via Zani’s Furry Friends a shelter that specializes in Puerto Rican rescues.



Gia is incredibly sweet. She loves to cuddle on the couch. She’s an active dog and does best when she can run around for an hour or two a day. She’s really smart and has responded right away to training. She is very food focused making her easy to train. She knows all the basic commands and is house trained.



She loves her toys and has learned to play fetch. She is not chewing as much as she has gotten older, but can be “mouthy”. She eats everything including fruits and vegetables and loves to gnaw on a nice big carrot.



She’s not a big fan of the city. She can get over-stimulated and scared, but in grassy or wooded areas she walks well and loves to explore. In the city she sometimes still pulls on the leash, but not so much in the country.



She loves other dogs and will run and play for hours with them. Gia is also good with children; she’s very gentle. However she is still jumping up when she gets excited and because she is big now she can knock them down.



Gia is currently around 45 pounds.

All our puppies need puppy play dates/doggy facetime so we recommend homes with other pups or daily interactions to keep them tired out, happy and social.

Dogs are spayed/neutered, UTD on age appropriate vaccines, Rabies vaxed, and microchipped (not Lyme vaxed but we seriously recommend it!) Many of us (cats/dogs) will be on display on Saturdays or Sundays, weather dependent--please ask by writing us at dogs@zanisfurryfriends.org and following us on FB. If you are seriously interested in adopting one of us in particular, please fill out an application early Friday so that we can be sure to be there. Otherwise we decide based on other variables. Usually we are in our foster homes so this is a bit more stressful and a slightly artificial environment but we do want to be seen and find our furever homes too.

Please consider providing a home for more than one dog, especially if you are considering adopting a puppy. Dogs are pack animals and very much enjoy as well as need other dog company to learn to play, socialize and be good companion animals to people. The upside to this is that you won't feel as guilty leaving them alone and you get twice the love. Please come! And if you can't adopt, maybe you can foster or volunteer, and you can always donate!
